Home Invasion Ainaloa - kimo wires - 07-10-2012
Just saw it on the news. Two punks entered through and unlocked door and tied up and elderly man and son. Took some money and things. These idiots need to be found and punished severely. We need to send a message out that this won't become a new trend here. The break ins are bad enough.

They are hitting HPP and Beaches, the police are not posting every one because there have been 2 recently in my local area (within two blocks) and they aren't showing up on their website. From somebody else that knows, there were 8 burglaries in Shores in the past month alone. The reality is about 50% of the houses in Shores are snow-bird houses or mainland vacation homes, furnished but vacant. The burglars are going around pounding on the doors, if somebody answers they take off, if not, they are casing it. The dogs are pretty worthless because they are barking all the time. One of the people commenting on the article said he came back to a burglarized home in HPP and they had bludgeoned his dog to death.

I can't stand dogs that bark all the time. So many people have them. It's like they say, let's get a dog for security, and they think the barking is useful. to me, barking is only useful if it's done when something needs attention. I don't need to know every time a car drives down the road or a person walks by, but i would like to know if a stranger is walking down the driveway

I think you are making pretty huge assumptions about people you don't know. Just because people aren't racing to post about a home invasion that was well covered in all the media, and aren't publicly promising to "lock and load" doesn't mean they "have blinders on". I just didn't think people should be thinking a home invasion happened in their neighborhood when it was in Hilo. (Even if I was dyslexic on the spelling.)
I think anyone who has lived here for long at all knows there is crime here. Several years ago I was lambasted on here for repeating what students of mine and their parents, had told me about home invasions being common here in Puna. My students were called liars and I was basically called a naive fool for believing them and their parents. As we all know from the news lately, they weren't lying and I wasn't wrong to believe them. However, in most cases, the invasions they told me about were personal, carried out by people known to the victims. The recent crimes in Hilo have been unusual because there have been several involving guns and random attacks on total strangers, rather than people settling personal beefs or drug deals gone wrong.
The best security is still to know your neighbors, at least by sight, and be aware of what is going on around you, dogs are a good deterrent, but not fail safe. Guns only work if you are home and get to it before they do, and security systems only help if someone can and will respond to the alarm. Investing in schools and recreation programs for kids so we aren't raising more generations of classless punks who grow up to be thugs on Ice would help in the long run. Judges who actually send people to jail for violent crimes and prosecutors who don't plea bargain violent crimes down to nothing would help too.
