Champagne Pond - intrepidscout - 07-16-2012

I am vacationing in Puna at this very moment, and have heard some great stuff about the Champagne Pond. However, I'm not clear on how to get there. Descriptions on the web indiate that may be anywhere within two miles of the point! I've seen reference to a gated community, and it's not clear whether I can get in or not. I can't even seem to pick out the spot on a map.

Can anyone help me? I need directions and instructions. GPS coordinates would be a great plus if you've got them!

Thanks!

Deb

There is a 4WD road (off of the Eastpoint Lighthouse road from 4 corners....rough & not a legal road..) and a private gated community (Kapoho Beach Lots) entrance to Champagne Ponds. You can park outside the gate & walk into the pond.

You might also try the "tidepools", just south of the ponds. Turn on Kapoho Kai Rd. and drive through the neighborhood (slowly please).
You will see the sign for parking at the end of the road . Great place for snorkeling and fish viewing. Enjoy the island.

Are you sure you are allowed to walk their streets inside the gate?
I never heard of that one before. Where on their website does it state that?

There's a lady who lives on Pohoiki Road who had two or three toes cut off from swimming in that pond! Does anyone know if it's any cleaner now? I won't let my mo'opuna swim there. At all.

That pond, lovely as it seems, may be an example of a place that has been loved to death. The road that was cut in over the lava years ago brought in a level of traffic and use that probably isn't healthy. Its a small pond.

RE: Champagne Pond - Carey - 07-17-2012

There are beach access entry points to the ocean and the pond listed on the beach access map....the roads are private, and the gate does restrict vehicle access to the beach access points. Outside of the gates, the roads are public, and parking must be done in accordance with the public parking on streets.

ADDED: do a search, this has been discussed in many past threads, mostly from the Barsell 2008 actions & the Yeh 2010 action with the county....
At this point it is still a very grey area... but legally parked cars on public roads (there is a noted discord on that statement) are not within the mandate of the homeowners, & it would be very difficult to question all people walking on the roads, as this is an area with high transient population in vacation rentals...

That's a lot to go through to get to a pond. Better watch for mosquitoes, they love ponds.

RE: Champagne Pond - Obie - 07-17-2012

From their website,They don't want cars parking there.

"Parking outside of gate discussed, with cars observed parked there over night.
Discussion of possible responses included gluing notices on cars, towing, and rock placement. Glady offered to contact Paul’s Service about towing. Fran would revive placing notices on cars."

I called the association and was told you are not allowed to walk in through the gate. Those roads are private property. The beach access map shows access points for the residents and their guests. Your best bet is driving the 4WD road from the lighthouse.
