is this normal for this time of year? i thought it was sunny during summer on the east side...

Normal for the eastside is rain....and the Hilo data for summer months have less than half of the "clear days" as some months & slightly more than ave. of "partly cloudy" and "cloudy days", but summer is a little warmer than ave. Climate data link:

It's Pele's invitation to visit the West side. Be grateful! Then you can come back with a greater appreciation for green and lush and a full catchment tank.
Hawaii has been in a drought for the past few years, look up historic rainfall and compare the last several years to the average.

actually september and october usually are drier than june/july but then the weather is always subject to change. but i always tell company to come during our "summer" which is fall. i do agree with daniel, a day trip to kona always makes me appreciate puna...
