The Stolen Valor Act - PauHana - 08-05-2012

A synopsys by Keith A Leiman
"The Stolen Valor Act of 2005 was signed into law by President GW Bush on December 30th 2006 in which upgraded a previous law that addressed the problem of those unauthorized to wear, manufacture, or sell military decorations and medals. It as made a federal misdemeanor to falsely represent oneself as having received any US military decoration or medal, and if convicted, defendants could be imprisoned for up to six months, unless the Medal of Honor is involved, which imprisonment could be up to one year.

However, the Act has been repealed because the Supreme Court decided that liars and charlatans should be protected within the rights of Freedom of Speech. "

Would this include a Puna politician parading around in a VFW shirt when they were never in the military?

Or does it fall under the "it's not ilegal, so it's not imoral clause" quoted above?[}Smile]

PauHana,

Punaweb is for discussion of Puna and Hawaii related topics. National issues can be discussed on a thousand other sites.

RE: The Stolen Valor Act - JerryCarr - 08-06-2012

OK, I can't resist asking. Who was it?

RE: The Stolen Valor Act - PauHana - 08-07-2012

My head is full of four letter words for this, but Fred and Blas are the only two I can politely use here. ( At the last VFW Sunday breakfast. )

RE: The Stolen Valor Act - Obie - 08-07-2012

The VFW sells those shirts to anyone who wants one.The money goes to support their various causes just like the profits from the breakfast and raffles.

Maybe you should call the police and report them for illegal gambling !

RE: The Stolen Valor Act - PauHana - 08-07-2012

They should re-think that policy.
The honor it bestowes is not theirs to sell. It leads people to believe the wearer has served in a foreign war, an honor others do not deserve if they have not. To me it is still stolen valor.

I couldn't care less about gambling.

RE: The Stolen Valor Act - JohnLuchau - 08-09-2012

I wonder if the VFW intended those t-shirts to be worn by the general public? I would think they are supposed to be worn only by members of the VFW unless the t-shirt says VFW Supporter.
kind regards,
John

Yes they are for the general public.
