Quote: 'The death was not counted as part of the island's official fatality statistics because it occurred in a private subdivision.'
Let's all try to be sure to die on private property - wouldn't want to scare away the tourists!

Mark Twain got it right: "There's lies, damn lies and statistics"

Did anyone on the forum know the person identified in the news link above, Terrance Manion of HPP?

Regarding the following:

quote:
Mark Twain got it right: "There's lies, damn lies and statistics"

Sorry, this is OT and has to do with the above quote. The way I recently saw it, in context, was the following statement by Twain, "Figures often beguile me, particularly when I have the arranging of them to myself; in which case the remark attributed to Disraeli would often apply with justice and force: 'There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."

It appears that the phrase was actually penned by Benjamin Disraeli and quoted by Twain, which may be why the quote is often attributed to Twain. You can find it attributed to both men on the web, but only the isolated phrase. Twain may have expanded on Disraeli's thought when he wrote, "Facts are stubborn, but statistics are more pliable."

Les:

Thanks for the clarification. I'm gratified as a Brit to know that it was coined by one of my forebears rather than a colonial!

This is really close to my house. Does anyone know exactly where the car went into the ocean? The Web story was sort of unclear.

This is crazy. Why wouldn't it be part of the statistic just because it was a private subdivision. That means a lot of deaths, especially in Puna, are not counted?

that's just crazy ... but maybe they're talking about vehicular deaths on the roads here, in which case it makes limited sense that it doesn't count as a fatality for the annual highway statistics because not on county road.

KathyH, you are correct. The article should have been more clear. The stat that it's not counted in is highway fatalities. As it did not occur on a publicly maintained road, it doesn't count. It will be counted as a death for Hawaii County but not a traffic death.
