Blinding Blue Headlights - PauHana - 11-21-2012 Is time to get blinding blue headlights banned? It is getting much more dangerous to drive at night because of these headlights. Most of them are not factory installed so they are not aimed properly, the result is these people have no low beam lights. Blue light is particularly blinding because of it's wavelenght. Some are so blue they can be mistaken for police cars in the distance. Here is an interesting explaination of what these are and what is happening with these bulbs and the human eye. http://www.danielsternlighting.com/images/BadBlueBulbs.pdf I would appreciate others opinions on this topic. RE: Blinding Blue Headlights - rainyjim - 11-21-2012 I agree PauHana, that they are a problem, but if people can get away with blasting stereos and driving with illegal tint then I doubt the cops would pull them over or write them tickets for this either. However, I have had experiences driving down the road and literally praying I'm in the lane because someone's blinding blue headlights are doing just tha...t blinding me from even seeing the painted lines! They need to go or like you said at least be properly installed and pointed in such a way as to not harm oncoming traffic! Cheers rainyjim RE: Blinding Blue Headlights - EightFingers - 11-21-2012 People put them in their cheap cars to make them look like expensive ones....from a distance anyway. RE: Blinding Blue Headlights - Bullwinkle - 11-21-2012 When one lifts a truck the headlight aim comes up just enough to blind the other drivers. I am always surprised the safety check places dont check aim ..... I opted to park my "sports car" and stick with the truck to avoid being blinded at night - the extra ride height helps. The headlight adjustment takes a screwdriver, garage door and about 5 minutes - its not that tough, just takes a little empathy and insight RE: Blinding Blue Headlights - kalakoa - 11-21-2012 Root cause is that DOT regulations specify "maximum wattage" for headlamps, and "wattage" is not a unit measure of "brightness" -- the excellent paper touches very loosely on this point where it mentions responsiveness of human eyesight. The regs "should" be revised to specify both spectra and luminous intensity, just like the broadcast regs were revised to define "loudness" ... but without enforcement, the rules are meaningless, more accurate rules won't matter. RE: Blinding Blue Headlights - Bullwinkle - 11-21-2012 Headlights are a focused beam - per dot aim (test) them right - no issues HID lighting is what you are seeing as being brighter (blue, yellow and yes white) - and un adjusted will blind you... truck or benz any bulb sold for automotive use - needs to be dot approved. Talk to you eye doctor and he will tell you we get more sensitive to the lights the older we get - the 20 year olds having no issues the 50 year olds moaning and complaining the most about this issue according to the doc. it is a b*tch getting older - my eye guy recommended yellow prescription lenses to use at night while driving (good for fog as well) RE: Blinding Blue Headlights - dmbwest - 11-21-2012 2nd ... the reason is non-adjustment. aloha, pog RE: Blinding Blue Headlights - Chuysmom - 11-23-2012 I remember posting about this sometime ago...it's really hard to see when these eye-poking lights are coming my way...I agree. Tony says they don't pass safety inspection with 'em...they are after market...same with the huge tires...they just take 'em off and put 'em back after the inspection. They're supposed to ticket people who do this, but that's just not gonna happen. Glad I don't drive too often at night. (Okay...I'm done with my gripe now...ha ha!) Galadriel LOTR RE: Blinding Blue Headlights - Bullwinkle - 11-23-2012 I have more of an issue with the great number of folks who run with their high beams on - and dont have the courtesy to dim them for on coming traffic out here in the subdivisions. Seems to be a BI thing................... RE: Blinding Blue Headlights - EightFingers - 11-23-2012 .....except when they'er driving through Hamakua in the fog |
