Saddle Road Update - Aaron S - 05-24-2007

Phase I of the Saddle Road re-alignment will be opening late Tuesday,
according to this HTH article

http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/articles/2007/05/24/local_news/local01.txt

The newly re-aligned road is from Mauna Kea State Park to Mauna Kea Access Road
(M.M 28 to M.M 35).

6 miles worth it? Dunno, I'd never drive that way again, Full of pot holes. I know they say the road will be done in maybe 5 year if funds are available to continue.

Seems to me that it's just not really news worthy for such a short road. Could see if it was half way done or 3/4 of the way done...

Maybe it's just me, but having this section of road open isn't going to convince me to use saddle road as a alternate route to kona.

RE: Saddle Road Update - Aaron S - 05-24-2007

As far as I understand, currently m.m
19 to m.m 42 is slated to be
re-aligned/re-constructed for sure at
this point.

Kiewit Pacific Construction did the
subgrade/grubbing between m.m 28 to m.m 35
and between m.m 37 to m.m 40 starting in early 2004. Goodfellow Brothers did the
paving of the m.m 28 to m.m 35 segment.

Plus GBI is re-constructing the m.m 28 to
m.m 19 segment. Next up is the bidding to
do the sub grade work between m.m 35 to
m.m 37 and m.m 40 to m.m 42. That won't
be until this summer though.

In short, when they complete the m.m 19 to
42 segment, it will make a huge difference.
Even this short 6.5 mile segment will help
also.

Lastly, they are doing the paving and the sub grade/grubbing work separately since it cheaper.

RE: Saddle Road Update - jerry - 05-24-2007

I love Saddle Road and take it every chance I get

It remains to be seen if the re-alignment will make it just another highway or if it will still have the feel of the awsome place it is.

RE: Saddle Road Update - Beachboy - 05-25-2007

I'm glad someone likes that "hellhole" called a road! Given the chance I'd much rather drive thru Puuilo-Waimea way. It's far more soothing on the eyes if you ask me.

Jerry, where did you grow up if you don't mind me asking?

RE: Saddle Road Update - Brad W - 05-26-2007

I'm with Jerry, the Saddle Road is great. Less traffic, faster and more enjoyable, particularly with all the construction on the northern route. The trip up to the top from Hilo is one of the best bike roads on the Island.

Me and my girlfriend took these pictures of the newly build Saddle Road.

RE: Saddle Road Update - glennoid - 06-03-2007

I am convinced that most of the reason for the Saddle Road "realignment" is so the Army can have the public 100% out of its area, for expanded live-fire training. Don't know if people here are aware of it, but recently evidence (i.e., high geiger-counter readings) has been found in Kona, downwind of the PTA, that the Army has been or is currently using Depleted Uranium rounds. Watch the KITV story here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L94IUSw54pQ

Time is an illusion, but a handy one. Without it, we would not be able to hear sounds, and without that ability, we would have no music.

RE: Saddle Road Update - Aaron S - 06-03-2007

The Army has made no secret that they want the public out of their training area up there. Heck they've been seeking to re-align Saddle Road since 1987.

Until there is convincing evidence that DU rounds are being used here, I'll believe what the Army has stated, they don't use DU rounds here.
