Big Overhanging Truck Tires - steve1 - 09-17-2013 In the past few weeks I have noticed what seems to be a new wave of trucks with big overhanging tires- many extending over 6 inches past the wheel well and of course no mud flaps. Not sure why this is a fashion statement but from a safety standpoint they throw rocks and splash rainwater at anyone who follows them. This isn't just at the beach- they are driving Keaau-Pahoa road as well as the Hilo Highway and I haven't seen any police pulling them over. If someone takes a photo of someone driving one of these rigs on public roads will the police ticket them? Any experience with that? I would love to see a new law with huge fines against any auto shop that converts a standard truck to an illegal menace. A $10,000 fine would probably stop most of them from doing the conversions. RE: Big Overhanging Truck Tires - ericlp - 09-17-2013 It is against the law. If these (people) <--- I use that term loosely tried pulling this stunt on Oahu they would be pulled over. I think on the big island it's more excepted because we have a lot more country here. But, no excuse for jacking your truck up and slapping on huge swampers that stick out past the fender wells to throw rocks all over your car and crack your windshield. I agree they are a hazard. If one passes me in the rain, I slow way down and let them get some space between me and them. It is dangerous and apparently illegal here as well, since they slap on skinny tires to go get safety checks. Cops here probably know em so they don't care or are just too lazy to hand out a ticket. Dunno about the camera thing you would have to ask the police on that. But if it is a go, I'd take some pictures with my phone as well. RE: Big Overhanging Truck Tires - kalakoa - 09-17-2013 Here we go again... Big tires (and lifted trucks) are a "cultural rite" no different than "game roosters" or those "botanical enthusiasts". Either prosecute everyone for "illegal activities" or leave them alone. Oh, and pave my roads while you're at it... RE: Big Overhanging Truck Tires - EightFingers - 09-17-2013 Uh oh.............. My truck has big tires.........but I do have mud flaps! RE: Big Overhanging Truck Tires - Carey - 09-17-2013 It is a $92 ticket for having tires that exceed the fender...the bigger ticket is the safety inspection violation...so make sure your picture has that safety sticker CLEARLY pictures... the inspector must be able to PROVE that the vehicle did not have tires that exceeded the fenders at the inspection...no proof = fines. Of course, that is if any of the police really write tickets for these things...have seen police at a stoplight on HWY11 with swampers before beside & behind a police car...nothin' happened, everyone drove off the light as if nothing were amiss... boy in many places, they would figure out how to make one vehicle = 4 tire violations PLUS the inspection violation.... but the judges in those places would also not take a letter to wipe the ticket... I would really love to see the stats on how many tickets are written here & how many violations are PAID. My guess, the stats are very low, just from a class I was in during a "Click it or Ticket" campaign a few years back, not one student, nor the teacher paid the fine, everyone who received a ticket wrote a letter & had the ticket wiped from their record... RE: Big Overhanging Truck Tires - bananahead - 09-17-2013 this is the Big Island get used to it its nothing new in reality its more of a stupid waste of $$ buying a porsche or corvette here than those trucks as they are needed to go hunting or fishing or go to very rural beaches like Green Sand or the Best Beach in the State, Makalawena ****************************************************************** save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha RE: Big Overhanging Truck Tires - kimo wires - 09-17-2013 I used to like the lift thing...When I was a teenager/twenty something. It's really kinda dumb. The frame gets lifted up and looks all bad but look at the Drive train. There's no more ground clearance there unless you have those really big balloon tires. And then it's not that much more. Then there's the loading issue. Too high off the ground to reach stuff in the bed. Then the Gas issue. Truck will burn more gas with a lift. Ever see someone with kids trying to get in? Can't. Kids gotta be lifted in. Then some put a lower step so their wahaine can climb in. There goes all that ground clearance. DUMB RE: Big Overhanging Truck Tires - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 09-17-2013 Starting in November there is a new procedure for safety inspections. All inspectors will use an iPad to fill out the "paperwork", which includes taking a photo of the rear of the vehicle that will be part of the completed forms that are filed. The photo (of the back of the vehicle showing the license plate and any overhanging tires) will be sent to a state database, so any time a car is pulled over by a police officer, they can pull up that photo to compare it to the car in front of them. If the safety inspection photo shows normal tires, and the truck has big overhanging tires the driver gets a ticket. No more "but the safety inspector passed it." RE: Big Overhanging Truck Tires - davidr - 09-17-2013 I think the aggravating thing is the inconsistency of enforcement of traffic and vehicle laws. My wife got a ticket for cell phone use and I've been stopped and checked at an alcohol roadblock but it seems so many others aren't hassled at all.
