Pohakuloa is the largest U.S. live-fire training area outside the continental U.S. It is 133,000-acres, nearly 5 times the size of Kaho'olawe. The base is known to be contaminated with Depleted Uranium (DU) and other military toxins. Continued bombing risks spreading the radiation and other toxic contamination.
Pohakuloa is also used for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (Drone) training. The U.S. is using drones in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan, the Philippines, etc. for surveillance and targeted assassinations. Thousands of people, including many innocent children, have been killed by U.S. drones resulting in increasing hatred of the U.S. around the world.

Well-known and outspoken Ann Wright, a citizen activist with extensive experience standing up for peace, human rights and the rights of war resisters and other veterans and government whistle-blowers, will give a slide-talk on US drone strikes: their increasing use, the dire effects on civilian populations, and implications for US domestic and foreign policy.
In October, November, and December, 2012, Wright made separate trips to Pakistan, Gaza and Afghanistan. She will talk about her experiences concerning the use of drones in all three countries. She will also talk about being a witness in a court hearing in Istanbul on the indictment of 4 senior Israeli officials for the murder of 9 activists and the wounding of 50 more on the ship Mavi Marmara in the 2010 Gaza Freedom Flotilla.
Background about our speaker: Ann Wright holds a Master’s and a law degree from the University of Arkansas and a master’s degree in national security affairs from the U.S. Naval War College. She spent 13 years in the U.S. Army and 16 additional years in the Army Reserves, retiring as a Colonel.
In 1987, Col. Ann Wright joined the Foreign Service and served as U.S. Deputy Ambassador in Sierra Leone, Micronesia, Afghanistan, and Mongolia. She received the State Department’s Award for Heroism for her actions during the evacuation of 2,500 people from the civil war in Sierra Leone, the largest evacuation since Saigon. She was on the first State Department team to go into Afghanistan and reopen the Embassy there in December 2001. Her other overseas assignments include Mongolia, Somalia, Kyrgyzstan, Grenada, Micronesia, and Nicaragua.
After her distinguished 16 years in the Foreign Service, on March 19, 2003, the eve of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, Ann Wright cabled a letter of resignation to Secretary of State Colin Powell, stating that without the authorization of the UN Security Council, the invasion and occupation of a Muslim, Arab, oil-rich country would be a disaster.
Since then, she has been writing and speaking out for peace. She fasted for a month, picketed at Guantánamo, served as a juror in impeachment hearings, and has been arrested numerous times for peaceful, nonviolent protest. She is an activist for peace and human rights who participated in the Gaza Freedom March and the the Gaza aid flotillas of 2010, 2011 and 2012.
Ann's home is in Honolulu. She is the co-author of the book "Dissent: Voices of Conscience" (www.voicesofconscience.com).

Wait until these start showing up in the Pacific later this year or next.

X-47B Unmanned Combat Air Systems (UCAS) Demonstrator

Initially, there will be squadrons of these with one human piloted plane providing escort and additional coordination but there are plans for completely autonomous missions. The "pilots" will be under the flight deck or somewhere else entirely. I have seen simulations where these UCAV and UCAS are equipped with nuclear tipped cruise missiles, given a general mission objective and provisions for going autonomous in the event of a communications linke break. In about 5 years, Skynet will become self aware and we enter the age of Aquarius, then peace will guide the planet and love will steer the stars.

We should be more worried about Green Harvest "upgrading" to drones.

Simply put: if a drone costs one tenth as much as a helicopter, they can fly ten times as many patrols -- because passing that 90% savings along to the taxpayers is just silly.

2030 - drones are checking the height of your lawn. You receive your fine via mail if your grass is above regulated heights.

RE: Killer Drones - Bullwinkle - 01-12-2013

Just noticed a segment on the Chinese deploying them as well - wonder if we will be seeing chinese spy drones this far out - seems the fact that they are unmanned removes many political problems when they "stray"

I am very concerned as to how air traffic control will handle this new technology - firm believer that having a pilot with a life to loose make make different decisions then some one who's shift is about to end....

So do I but I'm not competent with it yet but I hope to be able to look in my neighbors windows soon, jk, but I do have one I'm still trying to learn. Flight time per charge is too short for long training sessions. I'm hoping for use for cheap real estate aerial photo shoots. Well see. Got it from the verizon store for $270 with corporate discount.

RE: Killer Drones - Guest - 01-12-2013

the FAA predicts 30,000 drones in our sky come 2020. No doubt the Chinese will be flying drones over us, we can't resist flying them over and bombing almost everyone in the Middle East and northern Africa.

Looks like the Guard and Army have some surveillance drones for training over Pohakuloa:

Hawaii Guard gets flock of Shadow UAVs

Drones is a word being used generically these days when there are several different categories of UAV's. Drone used to refer to target drones in the 60's, and drones were basically "peaceful", meaning just used for surveillance and intelligence gathering. The whole armed combat UAV started when there was a surplus of F-16's as it was being phased out and some Air Force R/C guys, that were also concerned about their job security, modified some to be full size R/C airplanes. So, we now have, UCAV. This is the "cockpit" of the Reaper (descendant of the Predator), located in Reno.
