Formation of a lenticular cloud over MK - TomK - 01-27-2013 Thought one or two people here might like this: Lenticular cloud forming over MK tonight. One of our telescope operators alerted me about it. I don't know if the video will be easily available tomorrow so captured it. The cloud is still forming and might look quite interesting later on. Already there looks as though there's another lenticular cloud forming. Summit winds aren't ridiculously high which is what's normally needed for something like this, but they are very constant at around 30-35 mph so maybe that's a factor. There's a nice view of the sunrise, then sunset including the MK shadow. Anyway, I captured the video from here: http://cfht.hawaii.edu/en/gallery/timelapse.php?cam=c3 Tom http://apacificview.blogspot.com/ RE: Formation of a lenticular cloud over MK - TomK - 01-27-2013 Quick update Tom http://apacificview.blogspot.com/ RE: Formation of a lenticular cloud over MK - Hunt Stoddard - 01-27-2013 It was also neat how you could see the shadow of MK go across the landscape and then up onto the clouds at sunset. RE: Formation of a lenticular cloud over MK - Funkstopper - 01-28-2013 Thanks for sharing Tom. I loved watching the moonrise as well. Every time I enjoy my night walks under the full moon I think of the astronomers cursing how bright the moon is wishing it would go away. RE: Formation of a lenticular cloud over MK - Peter Epperson - 01-28-2013 I took this photo of Mauna Kea some years back on a flight from Kona. http://pacificgunite.com/lenticular.html RE: Formation of a lenticular cloud over MK - dmbwest - 01-28-2013 Awesome Tom ... Thanks ... Peter too. Moon woke me up this morning .. Still high up and blazing into my face after 6. aloha, pog RE: Formation of a lenticular cloud over MK - VancouverIslander - 01-28-2013 In case anyone else out there was looking vapidly at the video wondering what a lenticular cloud was: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenticular_cloud RE: Formation of a lenticular cloud over MK - dmbwest - 01-28-2013 Some nice clouds and music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJ2eRTCfHJ4 1:28 lenticular ??? aloha, pog RE: Formation of a lenticular cloud over MK - nana valley - 01-28-2013 Hey, Tom, count me in for these great views, too. I did have to google "linticular cloud" and was pleasantly surprised at how some grew into beautiful structures in the sky. Thank you[] RE: Formation of a lenticular cloud over MK - TomK - 01-28-2013 Peter - awesome shots - was that flight a little bumpy? Those are the sorts of lenticular clouds that really get the ufologists in a froth! And sorry, everyone, I should have mentioned what a lenticular cloud is, so thanks VancouverIslander! pog - yep, definitely a lenticular. I was trying to figure out the location of that shot and think it might be from Mauna Kea many years ago. I think that observatory at the bottom could be the old UH 24-inch telescope, but the shot would have had to have been from the very late 70s or early 80s. Plus that's an unusual place for a lenticular cloud to form over Mauna Kea (to the west of the mountain - they usually form to the east) so it could well be elsewhere. Nana - a couple of my own shots! http://apacificview.blogspot.com/2009/01/little-breezy-today.html http://apacificview.blogspot.com/2008/12/baby-lenticulars.html Tom http://apacificview.blogspot.com/ |
