Feb. 9 @ 4-6:30 pm - Geothermal @ Akebono - whalesong - 02-07-2013 Community Geothermal Meeting at Akebono Theater Saturday, February 9th 4-6:30 pm One of the leading expert on H2S (Hydrogen Sulfide) health effects in the US and maybe the world, Dr Kaye Kilburn is coming from the mainland to talk to the community (you) about H2S, its health impacts, and his proposed health study.... Dr. Kaye H. Kilburn's career spanned problem-solving in respiratory failure, emphysema, asbestosis and byssinosis at Duke University and Mount Sinai School of Medicine and more recently neurobehavioral and pulmonary impairment as a result of exposure to common chemicals: mold, hydrogen sulfide, diesel, pesticides, and insecticides. Dr. Kiburn will be demonstrating some of the tests he uses when he does health studies in cases such as BP Gulf oil spill. This could be a one time opportunity you to find out how dangerous the toxic gases from geothermal in Hawaii really are. Harry Kim will be a guest speaker as well to update us on his effort to raise awareness statewide on geothermal issues. Fracking geothermal could be coming to your neighborhood, and affect your water aquifer and air. RE: Feb. 9 @ 4-6:30 pm - Geothermal @ Akebono - rainshadow - 02-08-2013 Thank you for posting this - I must have missed the email notification. -- rainshadow RE: Feb. 9 @ 4-6:30 pm - Geothermal @ Akebono - hotinhawaii - 02-09-2013 Ugh, fracking has nothing to do with geothermal in Hawaii. The anti geothermal folks would do well to bolster your case with hard facts and not senseless fear mongering. RE: Feb. 9 @ 4-6:30 pm - Geothermal @ Akebono - opihikao - 02-10-2013 Someone (pahoated, in case there's any question[]) did their homework, and explains the facts of the matter quite well. Mahalo again, for the well thought out and factual response. RE: Feb. 9 @ 4-6:30 pm - Geothermal @ Akebono - rainyjim - 02-10-2013 finding a factual report, albeit 16 years old, is one thing but interpreting it correctly is clearly quite another... lets start with: heavy metals in the air (dense poisonous gas) generally stay low to the ground, "Since hydrogen sulfide is heavier thanair, it can accumulate in low-lying areas during temperatureinversions or when prevailing trade winds are calm." Yep, but the testing for such metals is not required at ground level. "The HDOH provided ATSDR with ambient air monitoring datacollected near the PGV facility." ambient air monitoring doesn't monitor the concentrations of gases at ground level _____________________________________________________________________________________ all this aside, if there is no health issues then why did the county buy out properties? if there is no health issues then why are those properties never allowed to be inhabited again? ________________________________________________________________________________________ I'm not going to pretend to have all the answers, but it should be clear to anyone with half a brain that there is more going on here than meets the eye AND if history is any precedent by which to judge chances are its about rich people getting richer at the expense(expense = in this case health) of the rest of us my .02 RE: Feb. 9 @ 4-6:30 pm - Geothermal @ Akebono - opihikao - 02-11-2013 Rainyjim, I have half a brain, in fact, trying to learn the art of utilizing the other half to perfection. [8D] Therefore, until the health issues are proven, (and not by those who were paid off the first time around a "couple million dollars"), but by an unbiased group of professionals, this argument holds no water. Many Hawaiians in Puna (including my ohana who have been in the area for generations), specifically near the plant have NEVER been ill, and didn't receive one red cent either by lawsuit(s) or relocation. Why did so many years go by, and only now the complaints start up again? Mostly by the same people/group! That is what makes these complaints suspect. JMO. RE: Feb. 9 @ 4-6:30 pm - Geothermal @ Akebono - rainyjim - 02-12-2013 I believe you have are quite a capable individual, and my remarks were in no way aimed directly at you opihikao, i respect and value the information you bring to the punaweb community and would in no way wish you to stop doing so or believe I wished you to stop. sorry if I offended you... ______________________________________________________________________ and to ted, I am upset with myself for how I reply to your posts, I know we have differing views on many topics, but I should not try and come off as abrasive and disrespectful as I do towards you. I recognize your intelligence and respect you because of it, your posts are extremely well thought out and vocalized, I do enjoy reading them and appreciate the information you bring to the table even if I do disagree sometimes. I most often wish to spark an intelligent debate with my comments, but now realize i must revise my strategy to do so without inciting insults or general 'acrimony' (thanks rob, your word applies all to well) I thoroughly wish to debate many of our disagreements, however I do not wish to offer personal insults or slights. I hope you can accept this as truthful because we have 'gotten off on the wrong foot' RE: Feb. 9 @ 4-6:30 pm - Geothermal @ Akebono - Rob Tucker - 02-12-2013 Very good. I look forward to thoughtful discussion and debates. Assume the best and ask questions. Punaweb moderator |
