Allspice - bluesboy - 02-15-2013 I acquired a plant last year and had no idea what it was. At first i though the leaves smelled like citrus, but recently it is more like cloves. It really started taking off in my greenhouse, so i got curious and googled it. It looks like it is allspice. Does anyone have experience growing that here? How big will it get? it's about 2 feet tall now. I heard that they are either male or female, and need a partner to seed. The seeds are what the spice is derived from. Anyone have suggestions for getting it to seed, and when it will flower? Thanks in advance. RE: Allspice - Carey - 02-15-2013 There is at least one allspice (with seeds during the hula fest) in Liliokalani Park, near the teahouse... of course this is a pampered plant, but we liked the look & planted two a couple of years ago...so way too early to tell how it will be here (downtown Keaau) but at the park it is med. short (not more than 20'ishy) and nice & bushy...along with the clove that is there.... RE: Allspice - kalakoa - 02-16-2013 Not sure about flowering, but I have clove and allspice doing well at 1200'. Allspice is susceptible to "ohia rust". Nutmeg trees from Plant'It Hawaii are self-fruitful (hermaphrodite). RE: Allspice - Rene Siracusa - 02-22-2013 I'm at 1200 ft too, and have had my allspice tree for many years - just one, so no seed production. However I use the leaves to make spice teas and toddys. My tree is about 20 ft. tall. |
