Good Lord! Check this out:

(*Snipped - More at link including pictures)

Media Release

Hawai#699;i Island police have dismantled a sophisticated underground bunker marijuana-growing operation in Puna.

Ending a two-year-long investigation that began in Kona, Vice Section officers served a search warrant Thursday on a home on Kokokahi Road in Glenwood. On the property was an underground bunker approximately 40 feet by 80 feet.

How many teachers would the money they'll spend on this, have been hired, if these funds were used for that purpose?

Meanwhile, where the flubber meets the road...

"Several allegations of US authorities favoring the Sinaloans have sprung up more recently. The son of Ismael Zamaba Niebla, who is currently on trial in the US, has alleged that he was promised immunity from American law enforcement, and that the Sinaloa Cartel was “given carte blanche to smuggle tons of illicit drugs into Chicago and the rest of the United States.” In January, a Newsweek investigation reported that El Chapo has been working as an informant with federal authorities, providing them with information about his rivals in exchange for his allowed drug trafficking.

If these rumors prove true, it would have several implications for citizen security in Mexico as well as the role of the US in the country’s war on drug trafficking organizations. Traditionally, Mexicans have been wary of the US’s involvement in their domestic security, which some see as a violation of the country’s sovereignty. Mexico has long had laws which prohibit foreign militaries from operating on Mexican soil, and these have often put the administration of President Felipe Calderon in difficult positions. Both the blowback from the failed Operation Fast and Furious and reports that the U.S. have flown unmanned drones over Mexican territory raised the ire of some Mexican legislators. If there is any truth to MX-1’s analysis it could make increased security cooperation with the US, a goal of incoming President-elect Enrique Peña Nieto, much more difficult.

It could also have an impact on drug-related violence in Mexico in the short term. As noted, the Sinaloa Cartel is known as less violent than the Zetas, reportedly showing more readiness to make deals with rivals and preferring the use of “soft power” like bribes and intimidation over direct confrontations. The country has already seen a drop in homicides in 2012 compared to previous years, and this strategy may have been a factor. In the long term, however, it could be detrimental to the rule of law. As InSight Crime has reported, making deals with drug trafficking organizations (official or not) affords them a dangerous kind of political leverage that they can use later for their advantage."

How's this for Free Trade?

" NYSE Chairman Richard Grasso Embracing A FARC Commander

A Real World Example:
NYSE's Richard Grasso and the Ultimate New Business "Cold Call"

Lest you think that my comment about the New York Stock Exchange is too strong, let's look at one event that occurred before our "war on drugs" went into high gear through Plan Colombia, banging heads over narco dollar market share in Latin America.

In late June 1999, numerous news services, including Associated Press, reported that Richard Grasso, Chairman of the New York Stock Exchange flew to Colombia to meet with a spokesperson for Raul Reyes of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia (FARC), the supposed "narco terrorists" with whom we are now at war.

The purpose of the trip was "to bring a message of cooperation from U.S. financial services" and to discuss foreign investment and the future role of U.S. businesses in Colombia.

Some reading in between the lines said to me that Grasso's mission related to the continued circulation of cocaine capital through the US financial system. FARC, the Colombian rebels, were circulating their profits back into local development without the assistance of the American banking and investment system. Worse yet for the outlook for the US stock market's strength from $500 billion - $1 trillion in annual money laundering - FARC was calling for the decriminalization of cocaine.

To understand the threat of decriminalization of the drug trade, just go back to your Sam and Dave estimate and recalculate the numbers given what decriminalization does to drive BIG PERCENT back to SLIM PERCENT and what that means to Wall Street and Washington's cash flows. No narco dollars, no reinvestment into the stock markets, no campaign contributions."

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Look at the picture on the url page, below.

OK, is it only me... those are some really nice raised bed planters...some of the nicest looking I've seen.... & the bunker does look, from the picture, like it was well constructed...probably better than some of the houses I've seen out there...

Meanwhile the 2 had a really low bail, and are already out...of course, with their expertise, they could probably have dug their way out anyhoo...

RE: Marijuana Bunker Dismantled - rainyjim - 03-04-2013

Looks like the county planning department has a lot to learn from the folk up in glen wood (grin)

RE: Marijuana Bunker Dismantled - ericlp - 03-04-2013

low bail ... For what? Growing plants? Why should we keep these people in jail when there are more serious crimes like auto theft or murder etc...etc...etc... I don't even see why this is still a crime since the majority of the people are for it. Hawaii needs to wake up. Ah well. I wonder if it was an old lava tube or do you think they actually dug out that space with a D9?

RE: Marijuana Bunker Dismantled - Susan - 03-04-2013

Eric I was wondering how they carved that out as well. They were a whole lot more resourceful than I. We can't even manage to get a small cabin together.

RE: Marijuana Bunker Dismantled - Carey - 03-04-2013

Only offense that I can see is using non-'green' diesel power to grow the greens......but then, I am not in law enforcement...and what bail would keep these troglogbitic-diggers in? (esp. with the county record for keeping people IN the jail....)

Not sure if they used it for the excavation of the bunker, but a backhoe was on the list of confiscated equipment...

Fern Forest is such a neat place. You never know what you are going to find. Kokokahi is one road up from Jungle King, home of the 4th dimension.

RE: Marijuana Bunker Dismantled - Seeb - 03-04-2013

are there anymore pictures of the bunker itself looks really well built

RE: Marijuana Bunker Dismantled - Hawaii Bound - 03-04-2013

Since they were in Glenwood I doubt solar was an option and judging from all those grow lights I would hate to have seen their Helco bill!
