Road side being dozed - Shoresresident - 09-29-2013 I am wondering what is going on with the sides of the Keaau roads getting bulldozed? Anyone can offer an answer? Enjoy life, smile, show compassion and most importantly be grateful for the things you have! www.aceyourcollegeclasses.com RE: Road side being dozed - TomK - 09-29-2013 Do you mean the highway between HPP and Keaau or somewhere else? H130 is being worked right now to either widen it or use the shoulders. I'm not quite sure which right now. RE: Road side being dozed - Carey - 09-30-2013 Shore, this older thread may give some insight: http://punaweb.org/Forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=16915 RE: Road side being dozed - kalakoa - 09-30-2013 I've seen some "weed abatement" techniques that look like minor bulldozing; these efforts do not include "construction zone" signage. RE: Road side being dozed - hotinhawaii - 09-30-2013 The short answer is: Highway 130 is being widened between Shower Drive and Keaau. There will be two full-time lanes toward Keaau with an actual shoulder. There will be one full-time and one shoulder commuter lane coming out of Keaau. RE: Road side being dozed - kimo wires - 09-30-2013 The excavation is happening pretty fast. It looks like they've cleared about 30 feet past the utility poles. I'm wondering if the county is planning to move the poles over?? It totally changes the character of the Highway. Looking at what they have cleared I was Imagining that it wouldn't be too hard to make a green-way there too. That would be awesome. And I think its needed with all the bike and pedestrian traffic on the road. RE: Road side being dozed - kimo wires - 09-30-2013 The excavation is happening pretty fast. RE: Road side being dozed - rainyjim - 09-30-2013 so I see this post seems to have two referenced areas described in it... first the improvements along highway 130 from keaau bottleneck - shower dr. second the "weeding" going along in the medians and shoulders along highway 11 entering/leaving Hilo. for 130, have you guys noticed the old growth fan palms on the makai side of 130? I agree with whoever said a green strip would be nice...and I think yes the telephone poles will definitely need to be moved... for 11, kalakoa, you seem to know whats going on? is all that grubbing literally just "weeding" ? they are really going at it...I also noticed they had left some of the trees, while getting rid of others... I think some of the trees spared from the recent purge on 11 may be Eucalyptus? (do you know Carey? - or anyone?) I'm not sure...I did notice they had cut down avocados, mangos, and the African Tulips in the median = ( RE: Road side being dozed - kalakoa - 09-30-2013 Pure speculation: the "hardcore weeding" on mauka 11 is large enough for a HELCO transmission line project, possibly related (project overlap, two birds/one stone, etc) to the pole relocation further down 130 and/or the recent upgrades above Keaau. I seem to recall that Hilo Coffee Mill has a 100KW PV array; HELCO is probably forcing them to wait until the entire Keaau-Volcano spur is upgraded before they tie it in to the grid. Yes, the poles on 130 are too close together, especially if the Four Lanes Of Highway With Pedestrian/Bike Trail ever happens. The heavy median clearing is enough for a lane widening, but that's highly unlikely. I keep thinking the price of gas will make the highway upgrade a moot point. RE: Road side being dozed - rainyjim - 09-30-2013 thanks kalakoa, all that that makes sense. |
