chinese restaurants in hilo ? - Green - 03-28-2013 any recommendations on chinese restaurants in Hilo ? RE: chinese restaurants in hilo ? - dmbwest - 03-28-2013 Happy Valley on Kilauea for dinner and Ocean Front Kitchen in Keaukaha for quick lunch. aloha, pog RE: chinese restaurants in hilo ? - dmbwest - 03-29-2013 203 RE: chinese restaurants in hilo ? - 2liveque - 03-29-2013 Sadly, Hilo has no real good Chinese joint. All are average to above average. No dim sum either. Whether it be Leungs, Chengs, Lings, Sum Leung, L&L Chopstick express -- all pretty much on par with each other. One that would somewhat fit the bill of "good" to me is HIlo Rice Noodle in the Kinoole Plaza. They have a mix of Vietnamese and Chinese dishes. Freshly prepared. Good ingredients. RE: chinese restaurants in hilo ? - dmbwest - 03-29-2013 2liveque .... L&L ??? Chinese ??? Who gonna listen to you now ? Happy Valley is my goto and pretty much satiates my visiting Asian relative's desire for 'real' Chinese so this is why I put it up. When asked at the table, the no English, 'review' is typically a chew, swallow and then thumbs up ... Anyone who has taken foreign visitors out can relate to this as positive. aloha, pog P.S. Dim Sum is a whole 'nother deal ... Personally I feel it would be successful in town but everyone says the same thing .... " Yes, dim sum gooood, but too much wooork ! " followed by laugh. RE: chinese restaurants in hilo ? - ericlp - 03-29-2013 Lemon Grass in Keaau is probably the best Chinese I've had on this island. We always order 3 dishes...Like the fried rice, spicy eggplant, and maybe a some chicken or beef dish. They seem to use fresh vegetables... I've tried about 6 - 8 times with the same great consistency. Only problem we spend about 30 bucks there every time we go. If that is a problem--as I don't mind spending a bit more for good fresh tasting food. I'm not one to try a every item on the menu. So, I'm not sure about the other dishes they have. RE: chinese restaurants in hilo ? - csgray - 03-30-2013 When we lived in Keaukaha Ocean Front Kitchen was our go to place for times we didn't want to cook; their chow fun was always good so I never ventured farther down the menu. It falls into the category I define as "cheap Chinese" which means you get reasonable food for a reasonable price, huge servings too. Carol RE: chinese restaurants in hilo ? - bluesboy - 03-30-2013 all those places are mediocre. wish we had a good place, especially with all the asian people here. RE: chinese restaurants in hilo ? - dmbwest - 03-30-2013 What would be your best of the mediore then Bluesboy ? All the asians here want to know. Ha na Carol, we say the same thing ... Hapa son has it down. " cheep chinee " AND not in an insulting way either. aloha, pog RE: chinese restaurants in hilo ? - Hunt Stoddard - 03-30-2013 Try Yen's Cafe across the street from the Hilo library. It's Vietnamese/Chinese. Small, cozy place, but very tasty food. |
