Key Limes - underarock - 04-02-2013
I see that plantithawaii has their sale this weekend but the website doesn't show key limes - anyone know where I might buy one?

You might want to check out the sale anyway, as I am not sure that what is listed on their website is their complete stock. If not there, Home Depot might have some. I know they had limequats a couple of weeks ago when I was there. Though limequat is a hybrid of key lime and kumquat, but I think it can be used the same way as a key lime.

ACE at one time had a bunch of Orange and Lime trees ... Don't know if they were "key" limes but you might want to check it out. Seemed to be pretty good prices and almost bought an orange tree but we grew from seed. Might be another option, find some limes on a tree and plant the seeds!

Two main kinds you see in grocery stores are Persian Limes and Key Limes, aka Mexican Limes.
The "Key" in the name comes from Key West, which popularized them to Americans with drinks like daiquiris and also with Key Lime pie. They are smaller and rounder than Persian Limes, and have a more floral smell. Typically about an inch or so across, and commonly sold in a string bag of 20.
Persian Limes are larger, often a couple of inches long, and are more oblong. Their taste is a bit stronger, and they have less "perfume."

Problem with growing from seed is that in a lot of commercialized crops are grown from grafted trees and although the seeds will produce a plant they won't produce a worthwhile fruit. For example a lot of avocado pits will grow a tree but the avocados those trees produce will be 99% pit with just a small nearly inedible amount of fruit between the pit and skin.
