We got many quotes from fencing companies, workers on craigslist, referrels, etc. It seemed to range from $6-$9 a foot. So my husband ended up putting in a fence himself. It was a lot of hard work and took many many weekeneds. We just couldn't afford to pay that much.

Mahalo for your help. We can't afford it either but my son has a bad shoulder and would have a very difficult time doing it himself. I see so many chain link and other wire fences that it seems there is someone who can do it more reasonably. Will call some places and then-----maybe settle for a gate--at least for now. Thanks again.

About 3 years ago one of my neighbors hired 3 young guys to finish his fence. I ended up hiring them to do my Hogwire fence - I bought all the materials, paid them $2/foot labor. I also contributed some of my own labor by prepositioning material, digging some of the post holes with my tractor, and actively supervising, but overall worth it. The only one I knew how to contact moved back to the mainland.

I fenced my farm land. I got a bid of $25,000 to fence 20 acres, too high. I waited a year and the economy slowed down a lot. Got it done for $12,500 and the gentleman did an excellent job. My site required bulldozing the fence line to clear the way and then some heavy duty air hammer work to blast holes. Galvanized T-posts with diagonally braced wood post corners and mid points. 5' tall hog wire with barbed wire top and bottom. Very happy with the fence.
Keeps pigs out and horses and cattle in.

does home depot rent jack hammers or some sort of drill to go through lava to put in galvanized pipe? That's the HARD part is putting the holes in Lava. The easy part is inserting pipe and pouring the cement. I've never done a metal fence and can't say how hard it is to stretch the material but if you had the right tool it would be pretty easy I would assume!
I have put up wood fences but sounds like a lot more work getting 4x4's in the ground and maintaining wood doesn't sound too fun!

You didn't say what type of fence you needed but the hard part is the posts. The fencing people run a racket by coming up with a "per foot" price including labor and materials. Contact all the main fencing companies in town and get estimates for installing the posts only. Get two quotes- one for posts and labor and one for just labor. Then call Dells and Mirandas and see if you can get the posts cheaper yourself. Get the galvanized posts as they are only a few dollars more. Once the posts are installed putting the fence up yourself is relatively easy. I don't think the fencing companies are any cheaper on the fence supplies than the local outfits.

HPM rents the pneumatic hammers - fairly reasonable as I recall., especially if you do the weekend. It's a towable unit.

Jupiter makes great fences and gate installs. Call him for pricing. It isn't easy work, and the hole jack hammering is definitely one of the most intensive parts. There's good fence and bad. For the investment, go for the good ones! His number is 987-8729.
