When is avacado season? - dayna - 04-07-2013

So I've got many avacado trees on our property. We got a few last year (I think it was the end of the season maybe?) so we're hoping to get more this year.

When is avacado season? How can I help my avacado trees? Do they like to be pruned, fed, etc.

I've got goats and rabbits for some instant natural fertilizer.

Any advice would be fabulous!

There are quite a few different varieties on island & many different "seasons" ...I think more than 100 varieties & the potential of year round avocado yields...with careful selection of trees for yields each month!

lucky for you the 7th annual Avocado Festival is next weekend... in Kona...

Like Carey said, avocados can fruit any season depending on the variety. As you can see with the following link, there are literally hundreds of varieties.

Right now I have at least six varieties of avocados that I have discovered so far on my property, giving fruit roughly October through May. Two trees were planted in the yard by the previous owners and the rest are growing wild in the jungle. I don't do anything for the jungle avocados and I think they taste way better than the fruit from the two trees in the yard. I did just fertilize the yard trees with some 10-30-10. We'll see if that makes them taste better. I'm sure goat and rabbit manure would be great for them though.

Alligator Pears Wink
if you want a long season (several months in Winter/Spring), go for the 'Sharwil' type , its the most popular one in Hawaii...... Sharwils have a long season and the fruit ripen about 10 days after you pick them within these 4 months or so (easy).... some types like the Haas have to basically ripen on the tree and be picked at the right time

save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha

coming from SE Alaska where NOTHING grows (I think we mowed our lawn 3 times a year haha) so Hawaii where everything grows is very overwhelming! I'm trying to cram a ton of knowledge into my head. I think I need a notebook with tabs to start keeping track of information. Like what type of avacados I have, what to feed them, when to prune them, etc etc etc. I don't even know what half the flowers in my yard are called yet! Thankfully they all seem to like the bunny and goat berries as food.

Like Shave Ice, I have dozens of avocado trees, all different varieties, all wild, many growing in the jungle where I can't get to them (not worth falling in a puka to get an avocado) and many reachable in the yard. I don't give them anything or prune them and they produce delicious enormous fruits October to May. Only downside is I can't reach them to pick them so I wait for them to fall, which is not a problem for me but makes them less desirable at farmers markets.

My DH gathers the avo's using I long poll with a net wired to poll he gets The avo in the net then gives a twist/pull
I only watch but it looks easy.

How do you know when the avos are going to start growing? Do they flower? Does the tree change in some way?

Yes, the trees will flower with hundreds of tiny blooms. It will be very apparent when it is blooming.
