Boy Falls Into Lava Tube Near Volcano Ntnl. Park - opihikao - 04-11-2013

FYI:

HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -
A 15-year-old boy fell into a 20 ft. lava tube Wednesday evening, officials from the Hawaii Fire Department said.

The incident happened just before 7 p.m. near the Volcanoes National Park Visitor's Center. Rescue crews were able to extricate the boy from the tube with lifelines.

He was examined by medics who determined that he had sustained no major injuries.

OK, I have a few questions about this: Who was with him (supervising)? Was the area he was in restricted, or openly accessible? If unmarked area, will this give grounds for a lawsuit to be filed, and will this be Federal suit or State?

People need to start paying attention to the basics when visiting the Volcano. Getting tired of the amount of calls up there to fire and police, 80% of which are avoidable. Not to mention, takes away from the calls in Puna which are also important.

Glad he wasn't hurt. JMO.

Since it's a federal park it would fall into federal court if it went that far. The USA is a sue happy nation but well... I will hope that doesn't happen. As for call in Puna, a lot of people including myself visit the park and the park is in Puna so this could be anyone even your neighbor. If they need more manpower to cover the park and subdivisions than so be it... I think the better question would be ... do the feds pay county police or fire to go help on federal lands?

JMO also.

Not sure who was the responding unit, but the park also does have their own responding unit (tied in with KMC...) so it also may not have been using Puna district county personnel

Never been a parent, but have rented enough kids to know that it is VERY hard to totally supervise a 15yr old boy...and the park is full of pukas, some known, but many are found when a foot or body disturbs the overlying plant/leaf litter/thin rock.... this is not unique to this park... many areas that have any type of cave/tube formations also have high incidences of break-through accidents...just something that comes with the territory!

and there are choke warning signs through out the park... but who thinks it could happen to them??? sure many of us have gone against prudent advice & visited up there without the suggested clothing, footwear, gloves...I know I have even ventured out on a trail with just a normal bottle of water & snack...not enough for prudent planners..

A few years ago, this also happened to a firefighter who was working a brush fire in the park. He suffered a pretty major back injury. I always remind my teen sons about this and tell them to stay on the trails every time we go to the park.

Aloha!

Update: (Got my answer where he fell - Snipped / More at link)

A 15-year-old boy from California escaped with only minor injuries last night after falling 25 feet into a steaming crack at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The youth fell after he attempted to leap over a protective railing system surrounding the crack located between the Kilauea Visitor Center and Volcano House, park spokeswoman Jessica Ferracane said.

Federal suit my okole. The kid reportedly climbed over the railing. If so, the kid and his parents should be facing federal charges. At the very least, they should be charged for the rescue expenses.

so true, and where were the parents? [?]

If my son had done anything like this, he'd be on a plane back home, staying with a 90 yr. old gramma, no TV, no internet, no cell coverage and 60 miles away from any town, ...while the family continued to enjoy the vacation in Paradise![Big Grin]
