mail delivery in HPP - mac nut - 04-18-2013

There is talk that due to numerous incidents of vandalism and damage to the mail box clustars in HPP that the post office may discontinue them. A recent reported crash at one site in HPP has taken out more boxes and almost hit a lady getting her mail there. Keauu mail and ship has been in contact with the postal service and they are reportedly considering giving HPP residents free boxes at the new building in Keauu by mc donalds in exchange for discontinuing the satellite boxes in HPP. 1200 new boxes would be brought in to that site to serve HPP. The window for this to come together is very tight. The landlord of the keauu site needs to know soon so he can plan for that use. Personally I think this is a good idea and much safer as the main roads in HPP are not the safest for getting mail at the cluster boxes. Any thoughts on this?

RE: mail delivery in HPP - csgray - 04-18-2013

The thought of every HPP resident suddenly having to stop in Keaau on the way home from Hilo, or drive out of the subdivision into the soon to happen construction traffic every single day to get their mail, even if they currently have a box right at the end of their street, is chilling. This is a really bad idea!

We spent years getting our mail at the Keaau post office before we got an HPP box and hated every single out of our way stop; we live on the Pahoa side of HPP and the Keaau PO was really a pain, even though I work in Hilo. Stopping in Keaau meant I got stuck in the zipper traffic every day, even when I got out of work by 3:30. We have never had an issue getting our mail safely from the HPP mailboxes, and removing reckless drivers from the road would do far more than moving all of HPPs mailboxes.

Bad bad bad bad bad idea....
...csgray is right, right, right.

Plus. Hmmm.
Where on earth will thousands of HPP-mail-retrievers park?

How about putting all the boxes at one central location off the road. I the hui has plenty of land. Put a roof over it and neighborhood watch can put up a bunch of cameras

There's this novel idea of having ones mail delivered directly to ones home, I wonder if that's ever been tried...

Is there anything more definitive about this than "there's talk"? I'd hate to lose my mail box on Kaloli for reasons given in this thread, but this is the first I've heard of it.

RE: mail delivery in HPP - Enough is Enough - 04-18-2013

I've heard rumors of the USPS stoping a lot of services(they are losing billions) the latest rumor is that the keaau post office is losing its lease and will be opening a new post office in kurtistown that will combine mt. View, keaau and kurtistown in one hahaha this was my favorite. The fact remains that there is a shortage of mail boxes, we don't have a safe secure place to receive mail, the mail boxes that we do have keeps getting vandalized and as long as our mail boxes are just off to the side of the road they will continue to be hit by wreckless drivers or by accident. What is being done? If the post office has to keep fronting the bill to replace cluster boxes every time someone hits one with a car or breaks one beyond repair trying to steal and change locks every time someone breaks into one who can really blame them for wanting to stop delivery. Somebody dropped the ball!!! Kudos to Mac nut for trying to pick the ball up. Even tho it might not be the most favorable solution it's good to know that some one is actively trying to solve our dilemma.

RE: mail delivery in HPP - Seeb - 04-19-2013

how about what they call a post office in a box. in many small towns on the mainland there are post offices in general stores,it would be a money maker for whoever was running it. and HPP could get its own zip code and identity -

RE: mail delivery in HPP - mac nut - 04-19-2013

I have heard that those currently paying for a box in Keaau would get their box for free if boxes for HPP residents are set up there. The mail and ship in keauu says most of their customers now actually live in HPP. Also they would offer a safe place to accept ups deliverys etc. I agree that stopping in Keaau for mail every day is a hassle for some. Maybe a compromise could be reached where only those wanting to set up a free box in Keaau could give up their sattelite box in HPP or get off the waiting list. I know for new residents waiting for a box in HPP the wait is over 8 months. The fact is that the USPS is going broke and they need to find some solutions. The repeated replacement of damaged/vandalized boxes will not help their situation.
