Old cess pit - eigoya - 05-28-2013 Buying a home near ocean in HPP. Surprised to find it on a cess and not septic. It's 30 years old, but we want to add a bath eventually. I imagine a new permit will trigger an upgrade. Should I pay to inspect or just figure Ill need to replace in the next year or so? What I read on-line says to beware of walking near cess pits but here I have never come across that worry. Is the engineering in Puna different than other places (UK) ? Any info greatly appreciated RE: Old cess pit - Carey - 05-28-2013 Many septic designers here use the cesspit as part/all of the drainfield... so all is not lost...and the engineering here is different than anywhere else I have been (inc. using cesspits as drainfields ;~) most of the cesspits here do have a solid cover, & most are covered with concrete....so not as much a walking hazard as the old wood boards over the pit used in days of yore... RE: Old cess pit - eigoya - 05-28-2013 Thanx RE: Old cess pit - EightFingers - 05-29-2013 Are you talking about the house with the whales painted on it? RE: Old cess pit - eigoya - 05-29-2013 No, not that close. RE: Old cess pit - Kapohocat - 05-30-2013 quote: I may have to disagree with that. DOH makes the installer cave in the old cesspool and fill it, then I guess it would be possible to use that area for the leach field. RE: Old cess pit - Carey - 05-30-2013 Cat, is this newer? in 2006, two of our neighbors & our church changed their gang cesspits to septic & both used the cesspits (one of which was a lava tube) for the leachfield RE: Old cess pit - Obie - 06-02-2013 Several septics have been done in Vacationland by using the original cesspool to put the septic tank in by cleaning out the old cesspool. This saves a lot of money by not having to knock a big hole in blue rock. The drainfield does not require as much excavation as the tank. RE: Old cess pit - Kapohocat - 06-09-2013 Obie, when my mother's was done across the st from us, the cesspool was required to be caved in and abandoned. Maybe it is the installer's call though - if it had been unused for a long time, and pretty dry maybe they would re-use it or if like the ones you are talking about, there is no other choice for the location of tank. RE: Old cess pit - Obie - 06-10-2013 It may have been too close to the house.Jim told me that at least 2 have been done in the neighborhood by cleaning out the cesspool and reusing the hole. |
