Worst weather event in Puna? - Wuzzerdad - 05-31-2013 [8D] I was wondering after dodging tornados the last couple of weeks what is the worst bad weather in recent history on the big island of Hawaii? I searched and found no recent hurricanes, but does it ever rain like the moonsoons I experienced in Viet Nam 45 years ago? I have been to Hawaii every month of the year, 42 weeks total in the last 10 years, and over 100 weeks in my lifetime, and never experienced a long stretch of bad weather, unless you count when the trades shifted and there was a Kona wind in September of 92. ( I am pretty sure it was 92 anyway) I know it rains like heck sometimes, but always quits pretty fast, and never more than 2 or 3 days steady, In 93 the high temp was 86 deegrees for a couple of days, and the vog was terrible. So we just drank beer and played cards. Then when the weather got nice we drank beer an played cards.[] It seemed like we always drank beer and played cards. ( I quit drinking in 93 ) I am talking about Puna mostly, around Pahoa, as I know on Kauai and other places it rains in places all the time and so on. It has rained for 9 days straight here. I am so sick of it. It quit for a few hours today. Supposed to start up again tonight and back to tornado warnings. 2 more medical tests and I think I will be able to get a ticket bought.[:p] I started out with nothing and I still have most of it. Mahalo Rick RE: Worst weather event in Puna? - Carey - 05-31-2013 2000 had the worst flooding recently, 2005 had a month long drought with wildfires, 2006 had 40 days of rain, inc one day with over 20". 2007 hurricane Flossie came near the island (image: http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2008/images/hurricaneflossie.jpg & the night before a little earthquake...) Hurricane Iniki hit Kaui in 1992, but was last one to tough one of the islands... During the 2006 rains, we had a friend visiting from the dreary midwest, & one thing she noted, even during the 20" day, there were peaks of sun & the sky was not that dull dark grey....we did try the "go to the other side" trick, but the rain followed us that week & we played in the rain oh, & though I have heard people say the rain is warmer....a drip down the back is still...umm ... invigorating - never have taken the temp of the rain...so wouldn't know if it is really is warmer...but the air usually is! RE: Worst weather event in Puna? - terracore - 05-31-2013 Here's a flood: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M73yAyZPc_8 Here's another: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAsU9DKi5GQ Not convinced? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LaHOZXWRo8 RE: Worst weather event in Puna? - Kapohocat - 05-31-2013 Although all the things Carey mentioned are probably "worsts" - there was a saturday in December storm 3-4 yrs ago that caused so much flooding, and lighting strikes, etc.... That was pretty bad -I think 3 or 4 houses were hit by lightning. RE: Worst weather event in Puna? - Rob Tucker - 05-31-2013 I remember November, 2000. We got 29 inches of rain in 24 hours in Pahoa. It was impressive. Pahala got 36". The only real effect on me was I did not go anywhere that day and I couldn't talk on the phone. It was like living under a waterfall. RE: Worst weather event in Puna? - Obie - 05-31-2013 Hurricane Estelle 1986. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdUD8pgoQiA RE: Worst weather event in Puna? - Wuzzerdad - 06-01-2013 quote: We are having another 500 year flood in out area, or is a 1000 year flood this time? We have had 4 since 1993. I feel sorry for people who lose everything, but some people are going to lose everything again for the #4 time in 20 years. That is just plain silly. [:p] Almost 42" of rain here in May. Glad it is over. I saw the Tribune front page for today about Hurricanes. I probably would have not posted had I read that first. I think we will have a masonary house built in Hawaii. I am really afraid of big winds, Tornados or Hurricanes. I lived through a "Bow" wind in 1998 near Iowa City, Over 120 MPH for almost an hour. A Hurricane in Puna would be much worse I would imagine since a bow wind is a straight line wind. A Tornado or Hurricane is kind of like a wind blender. [:0] Thanks for responding, I am one good cancer scan away from a ticket to Hilo or Kona for a month of R&R. And speaking of R&R, that is how I got to Hawaii for the first time in 1970. Probably should have went there when I got out of the Army as I fell so much in love with it. [] I started out with nothing and I still have most of it. Mahalo Rick RE: Worst weather event in Puna? - bluesboy - 06-01-2013 don't forget earthquakes, tsunamis, lava flows and explosive eruptions.
