Hunting and firearm Reg questions - oink - 06-07-2013

Hunting:
1)I tried and failed to find the regulation addressing the magazine capacity limit for rifles for hunting purposes. I'm guessing 3 or 5.
2)Is the 22WMR legal for hunting with a rifle for pigs when not utilizing dogs?
3)As best as I can tell the 22LR isn't legal for hunting pig with a rifle, correct?

General firearms: The magazine limit is 10 rounds for handguns but I'm not clear on if there is one for rifles. If so, does it apply to nondetachable tubular magazines as is common on many 22LR?

Thanks

I'm standing at Jhara sporting goods and they are saying :
Rifle mag is 30 max.
Handgun mag is 10

Clerk is saying you can hunt with anything from slingshot to a muzzle loader. All calibers are allowed.

No mag capacity limit for hunting like most places have?
And I can hunt pig w/o dogs with a 22LR?
Thanks for the reply.

What is the success rate for shooting pigs with a .22?

I rather use a .30 carbine.

22 is fine for ambush or still hunting where accurate shot placement can be made from relative safety. Not recommended for hogzilla or busting through brush to get them. Been many a pig taken with a 22 under appropriate conditions. I have a 44mag carbine and a 308 carbine for more challenging situations. Were I to plink one in my yard it would be a 22.

You'll be better off with a .308.
For regs go to www.2ahawaii.com , lots of info there!

I think you can carry up to 15 rounds in your magazine, unless the rounds you use can be used in a hand gun then it's 10. Also, you need a muzzle velocity of 1,200 foot pounds to hunt without dogs. Example, I can only load 10 rounds into my .30 M1 Carbine because there are hand guns that fire .30 carbine. Also, my muzzle velocity is not high enough so I cannot carry this firearm in a hunting area without dogs. I don't hunt with dogs so I usually carry my .243 or .25-06. The magazine limits only apply if the magazine fits into a pistol. Even scary black guns like the AR-15 and AK-47 are legal here with a 30 round magazine. Its a wonder those guns haven't massacred everyone on the island by themselves.

It is clearly stated in the regs that for hunting big game without dogs you must have a projectile with 1,200 ft-lbs of energy minimum OR a shotgun with slugs. If you are using dogs you may use a 22 mag. Can't use a 22LR for anything, legally.

Doesn't surprise me that the guys at J. Haras aren't constrained by the regs, to the point of not knowing them.

It is the kinetic energy of the projectile rather than the muzzle velocity that matters. For example HiloDiver's .30 M1 round has a muzzle velocity of close to 2,000 fps but energy of less than 1,000 ft-lbs.

Interestingly a Winchester .410 1/5 oz rifled slug has 1800 fps but only 650 ft-lb at the muzzle. I guess it is sort of grandfathered in because as far as I can tell no distinction is made in the regs between any of the gauges as long as it is a slug.

High powered air rifles are revolutionizing hunting in places like Europe that have more firearm restrictions than Hawaii. One company makes a 50 cal air rifle suitable for taking down deer and elk. The rifles themselves are relatively quiet but some of the projectiles break the speed of sound and create a mini sonic boom, but still far quieter than a traditional firearm. They have some fascinating engineering behind them. They require scuba equipment or specialized pumps to charge them. These aren't CO2 or pump-action kid toys. While not suitable for pigs, there are .22 and .25 models on Amazon (some can be pumped) that are excellent for smaller game like fowl, rabbits, mongoose, etc ranging from $150-$600 depending on features and power. Some of the higher end models could probably dispatch a pig with the right projectile and good aim. They are nearly silent so if you miss, you may get a second shot. The power, projectile size, quietness, range, and accuracy of these weapons are improving with every new model year. Not sure what the laws in Hawaii are regarding these weapons. Seems like here you can be cited on weapons charges if you shoot a basketball, miss the backboard, and it rolls down a hill and grazes somebody's ankle.
