Where do you get your hay? - dayna - 06-17-2013
I feed mostly forage but I've got a sheep with a broken leg that I stuck a young goat for company and a sick goat also in her own pen.
So I'm having to feed some hay. I can't gather enough forage to feed them.
I don't know much about goat/sheep hay so I've been feeding alfalfa.
Does anyone know if I should feed a different type of hay and where do you buy hay from for the cheapest?

When we had wintered goats, we used legume (alfalfa, vetch, clover) with fine grass hays...Probably sheep would do fine with those too.... but the cost of hay is way high here...so if you know of anyone cutting an untreated fine grass lawn...maybe their grass clippings would be a good extender to the alfalfa...Dells, Miranda & Pahoa are the only ones I know of...not sure if there is a big $$$ difference on the hays here...

I'm not really sure what this even means but when I had a milking goat I was warned not to feed to much alfalfa "it burned hot" was the expression
the feed store told me.
I think he meant too rich on the digestion--
The pellets I used was a mixture of grasses.
Sorry to hear about the poor sheep-- hope it mends soon...

I know this isnt terribly helpful right now, but you might want to plant some perrenial peanut somewhere for future uses like this. IT's really decorative in your yard, but they could eat it in a pinch. I just saw some seeds on craigslist and it looked to be a lot! less than I paid for flats of it for my land. The wild chickens around also appear to enjoy eating it some. I think the "real name" is pintoy or something like that. Hope your animals are feeling better soon! I also think I saw "bales" of grass on craigslist recently. I was pretty surprised to see this, and had never seen it before living here.

Miranda and Dells have it but it is super expensive. I used to wait until we were going to be near Waimea and then buy some there. You can get a full bail for about half the price that the Hilo feed stores sell a half bail for. Same goes for straw if you are using that for bedding.

just went to craigslist to look for you. The bales of grass are 12 dollars each up in hamakua and the number is 936-5371. I suppose this is expensive but I dont really know. Maybe go to the dump an stalk the people dropping off their green waste?

I just started doing some mowing and our grass is TALL.... I have a 30 acre ranch but most of it is for the cows and sheep to graze. However where I mow is separated from them and you are welcome to come rake & bga and take for free, plus gather anything else you can find that would be good for them. I have LOTS of banana trees that you could take leaves from and they even like some of the stalks cut up. I think we have ginger around which they love and other stuff.. Bring some BIG contractors bags to gather in. I am on N. Glenwood rd near Volcano but a LOT closer than Hamakua and it's all free for you. Punawebbers take care of one another when we can.
