pahoa safety check - terracore - 06-18-2013

Where is a recommended place to get a vehicle safety check in pahoa or keaau ?

RE: pahoa safety check - rainshadow - 06-18-2013

Wally Boys, 33rd dead end (between Paradise and Maku'u; turn off highway onto Maku'u, left onto 33rd) in HPP - fast, easy, no apt, just ring and check in, show up. Usually takes me about 30 minutes from phone call to sticker applied.

We went to Wally's. It was a good experience. Nice people and good at explaining the process when we went from Mainland to Hawaii plates.

If you do go into town, the 76 station beside Puainako KTA. No appointment, no longer than 5 minutes of your time. Make sure all your lights work.

How do you know when your safety check is due? Will someone or govt entity notify me?

Your current safety check sticker on the back of your vehicle has the expiration date for your safety check. (The expiration date will be the last day of the month of your last safety check for that particular vehicle.) It's your responsibility to get it done before the expiration date. There is no other notification from a government entity.

We go to Paul's in Pahoa to have our safety checks done. We're very happy with them. FWIW, Lex Brodie's wanted to do a bunch of additional safety checks on our truck so they could charge us for a lot of unnecessary work that didn't need to be done. That experience with LB was several years ago, so things might have changed there.

good thing I asked. I just went to look and it says 6/13! In other words, I'd better do this right now! Mahalo!

Obviously not in Pahoa or Keaau, but recommend them. Last year I went there to get a safety check and my reverse lights didn't work. They checked to see if the bulbs were broken and would have replaced them free of charge. I offered to pay for the work they did do (a few minutes getting access to the bulbs and replacing one of them) and they wouldn't hear of it. They sent me off with a recommendation of where to get the problem fixed and wasn't charged a dime. I go back there each year.
