Sorry if this has been talked about recently and please direct me if so. May be living in Puna for a year and working remotely to the mainland. Looking for speeds DSL plus. Any suggestions? Mahalo

A search will give you some of the more recent threads on this, BUT it all depends on WHERE in Puna you land...some areas are not on gred, and have a very limited selection of choices, others have many choices...problem with giving details on WHERE these are, is that it can vary block by block .... If you're going to be living here for a year (and presumably renting) be sure to ask about internet availability before signing anything. And don't just ask if it's available, make sure it's already installed and operational before you commit to anything. Hawaiian tel technically offers DSL in Orchidland, for example, but we've been trying to get it installed for four years now without success ("no ports available...").

If you call Oceanic with an actual street address, then they can tell you definately if there is cable and highspeed internet avail through them. I have Oceanic and have been very happy. I'm calling them myself about all the properties I'm looking at. I wouldnt rely upon someone else telling you the info.

Note that in this context, "actual" means "permits pulled, HELCO installed" -- and even then, Oceanic maybe "unable to locate", despite the fact that their lines are on the street in front of the property.
Telcom is similar, but they are able to use a neighbors' phone# as reference.

most lots in Pahoa (Hawaiian beaches, Hawaiian shores, Hawaiian Parks) have Road Runner (cable). Speeds are about 10 megs down and 1.5 up. tho, of course you can pay for faster speeds maybe 15 down and 5up? Probably the fastest speeds on the island are from road runner. DSL from Hawaiian Tel isn't bad if you can get it.
Hawaiian Paradise Park also has Cable but only half way down. Other wise for the majority of the subs like from Orchidland to Fern Forest you looking at sat or cellphone service. Tho, Verizon is offering high speed internet in some area's Verizon HomeFusion Broadband but it's expensive.
Wireless WIFI is coming albeit slowly.

Aloha - A little known secret to getting Hawaiian Tel internet, call when the Customer Service phone line opens up (about 8:15 a.m.), they are processing all the disconnects from the day before, so you will get the jump on the first port that is available. Took me 5 years of calling, one of the tech's told me about this, and voila - we have internet, yay!!

I use Oceanic (Roadrunner) in Nanawale on the upper section of the subdivision. I, too, suggest you don't take the word of the landlord about what is available. I'd check with each company. Roadrunner has been trouble-free for me for over a year, however, it took 6 weeks for them to come and hook me up! I have several friends who have satellite and they lose signal frequently because of dense, wet clouds.

free instal as well, first time they arrived - they saw the 700 foot driveway to the pole, wanted 2700$ all of a sudden and bailed - I passed
few months later they sent another free install letter
.... took 6 months, 2 installers and a case of coca cola for a free install - well worth it when I look at the folks at safe way and Mc Ducks - tough way to work.......

bull, I think you got that reversed ... But what subdivision in Mt View are you in? I didn't even know RR was available up that way.
