Freshwater Fishing on BI? - fishnchamp1 - 10-07-2013

Is there anywhere to fish for freshwater species on the Big Island? Waiakea pond got freshwater fish? Thought I read something a lone time ago about tsunami salting that pond and it now being able to be restocked since then?Probably gonna bring a canoe rather than leave it here to start teaching my young kids about boats and water so just got me wondering if there is any ponds to fish. I know some of the older island have a serious peacock bass thing goin on... Maybe digging and stocking my own pond is the only way to go[?][:o)][?]

I don't think so. I mostly fish underwater (spear), or off cliffs, or by kayak. Both the later with poles : )

I'd be happy to have someone prove me wrong about the freshwater though...

Most streams/ponds are seasonal types that flood/fill up during the rainy season.

Thought I had seen something about fresh water fly fishing on the BI some years ago so went looking for that info again. Found this, not quite what I remember but looks like it should answer some of your questions.

I am so much more like I am today than I ever was before!

The fishing area (southwest end) of Waialoa pond is ONLY with a trolling motor boat...no canoe, kayak, SUP, jetski, motorboat, sailboat, skin/SCUBA/spear....

Kiholo had fishing (stocked) years ago

Many of the freshwater streams on this island have amphidromus gobies (o'opu wai) that spend part of their life at sea & use their sucker like pec fins to "walk" up the waterfalls (making a snuck snuck snuck noise...it is odd to be up elevation & see these guys 'snucking' up a shear cliff waterfall...) These are fished, but not as much as the many ocean species. On some of the other island trout is in some of the streams... but the elevation change here would probably make that a constant thing...

If you have a chance stop by and talk to Mike at Tokunaga Store, he is very knowledgeable and helpful.

The fish and poles are bigger. You'll be fine. Some education required for what to eat, what to throw back, whats endangered, what you should be tagging, etc.

Second the tokunaga store.

like Carey said, although small and not for eating... we have a couple incredible endemic freshwater fish that can climb vertical 1,000'+ waterfalls! Smile
there is a nice plaque at Akaka Falls that explains it well

save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha

Just flying around the island on Google Earth from my cubicle and came across this location up around Ninole... Maybe fishing there? 19.878154,-155.259836 Maybe too cold (elevation)?

Also Puukapu Reservoir up Waimea side could be promising?
