Question: Microclimates - Sun and Clouds in HPP - jenw - 06-25-2013 Aloha, We are currently living on the Big Island and are looking to purchase a home in HPP, specifically on 29th Ave, a few blocks off Kaloli Drive. It looks like some areas of HPP are sunny, others are cloudy more, depending on location. Does anyone know if it ever gets sunny in that area? It has always been cloudy when we've seen it. We can handle plenty of overcast, but just curious is there is ever blue sky. Is anyone familiar with the area that could tell us how often the sun peeks through and more about the weather there? Thanks so much. I have enjoyed all of the information on this forum, it's very helpful. -Jen RE: Question: Microclimates - Sun and Clouds in HPP - jenw - 06-25-2013 Just wanted to add: 29th is very close to 130. So it would even be helpful to know if it is ever sunny driving down 130, close to Shower or Kaloli Drive. Mahalo!!! RE: Question: Microclimates - Sun and Clouds in HPP - Carey - 06-25-2013 As you are looking around the corner from Rozettes, YES they do get sun...as much as Kaloli Pt? -no... The microclimates are amazing here & you really do benefit from visiting an area often...1/2 a mile from our house at almost the same elevation as ours, gets inches more rain a month... even the vegetation around your lot can influence the feeling of sun/no sun... There are full days of sun (most likely today) but...the next mauka-makai street IS Shower..and that it does! RE: Question: Microclimates - Sun and Clouds in HPP - Seeb - 06-25-2013 Below 10th St is the blue hole ( more sun less rain) RE: Question: Microclimates - Sun and Clouds in HPP - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 06-25-2013 As Seeb noted, 10th Street down to the ocean is the sunniest area in HPP. When tradewind weather reaches the east coast of the island, the air rises upward with the slope of the island as it gains elevation. This causes moisture in the air to cool and form clouds. As the clouds continue inland they rise even higher, become colder and at a certain point rain is formed. RE: Question: Microclimates - Sun and Clouds in HPP - jenw - 06-25-2013 Thanks everyone for your input. Much appreciated! RE: Question: Microclimates - Sun and Clouds in HPP - birdmove - 06-25-2013 I have to say that we get plenty of sun where we are. That is on 23rd about a couple blocks off Kaloli on the Shower side. WE gat a nice mix of weather. Most nights, we get rain. It waters the plants and keeps our catchment tank nice and full. Almost every day we get sunshine. We do get some rainy days too, but mostly rain at night. That is perfect for me. I ride motorcycles scooters and bicycles. Most of the time when I need to go somewhere it isn't raining and I take the scooter. Today, I did a bicycle ride from Hilo to home for the first time. No rain. I'll be 60 in a few months and have been planning a ride to Hilo and back. Today we had to return a rental car, so I hauled my bike in my pickup and picked my wife up at the rental car place at the airport. She then dropped me off at Aloha Fitness, where I did my Tuesday workout, and then rode my single speed bike home. I had 2 workouts today. Now our daughter lives down on 3rd off Makuu, and they certainly get more sun and warmer temps down there. But I know that some owners in the lower areas run out of catchment water and have to pay to have their tanks filled. That seems to run about $160. So, there is that to consider. We like right where we are at just fine. Jon in Keaau/HPP RE: Question: Microclimates - Sun and Clouds in HPP - bluesboy - 06-25-2013 in my opinion this whole thing with microclimates is going a little overboard. i would agree with maybe two distinct rain sections in HPP - mauka and makai, but you must understand the weather systems goes all the way up to Mauna Loa - about 30 miles away, with much more significant topographic differences along the way than is represented just along Kaloli/Paradise/Makuu. RE: Question: Microclimates - Sun and Clouds in HPP - jenw - 06-26-2013 I appreciate all of this information. Really I just want to know if the sky is ever blue there I know that seems silly, but we are relocating from up the coast a bit, and we know the weather is different everywhere, and we know it can be cloudy and rainy for long periods of time. Each time we have been to this property it has been entirely overcast. Just hoping for some peaks of blue here and there. Many mahalos to you all for sharing your thoughts on the area. I love the sense of community I am seeing on this forum. Looking forward to being part of it! |
