Easy things to grow at 2000 ft? - mangobingo - 07-13-2013

Let's say you've just bought a bit of land around the 2000 ft elevation, and you're going to be away for a few months before you start building. Would you plant anything before you go, to get established? If so, what can be left to itself and do OK? I'm thinking lemongrass would work, maybe lilikoi, what else? Or will the pigs just ruin anything that gets planted while humans aren't around?

Same question we asked a few years ago buying a lot at similar elevation. What we planted didn't matter, the pigs destroyed it all in our absence. My advice, plant whatever you want, just don't spend a lot of money on it. The pigs are especially fond of new plantings. Of any kind. They didn't eat any of our plantings, they just destroyed them by rooting them up.

What if you got some rebar or stakes, placed them around your plantings and then put some cheap fencing around the stakes. So the trees/plants are fenced in while you are gone.

I'm thinking "a few months" is not worth worrying about. Wait until you get back. Things will catch up soon enough.

Peace and long life

Stupid pigs. I definitely want ulu, but probably when I'm there to look after it. They're not cheap. I'll think about it...

2000 feet is too high for ulu.

i have breadfruit at 2200 trees grow well but very limited production. jackfruit however does great trees and fruit, as do almost all citrus. of course bananas, mulberry, figs, chayote, passionfruit... then if you want to go ornamentals we could go on and on..

You might be able to fence out the pigs for awhile, but the weeds will soon overwhelm you new plantings. The weed vines will love the pig fencing. They will use it to grow up and over your new plants.
