The DOE screws Charter Schools - Greg - 08-04-2013

Details inTiffany's Blog

The DOE had absolutely no economic reason to ban HAAS kids from riding the bus. Since the HAAS students were already paying double, the DOE will actually lose money on the decision. The bus will be going the same route with 60 empty seats(About $150/trip).

So why the sudden decision? Why wait until the Friday afternoon before classes start to notify HAAS? Why disparage special needs children and their parents?

Disabled students are being denied transportation to an education.

Invoke ADA in a Federal court.

Next: if DOE was charging double for HAAS students, and now refuses to carry them, that's "fiscally irresponsible", even if it's nearly impossible to sue the government for that kind of behavior (especially now that they've raised it to an art form).

Alternate: assume HAAS can create a bus system. Who wants to bet that they "somehow, mysteriously" can't get all the necessary permits?

Priorities: County will never pave the roads to my house, and I'm fine with that; as an adult, it's my lifestyle choice. Kids don't have that same choice, and there's no reason to screw them over at such an early age.

This is a common part of Hawaiian politics.... reward your friends and punish your enemies.

RE: The DOE screws Charter Schools - unknownjulie - 08-04-2013

This is very upsetting!

The principal at HAAS is an old friend of Billy Kenoi's. I can guess they've been on the phone this weekend. Any bets on Billy resolving this situation?

In favor of whom, and for how long?

Actually this decision violates the Equal Educational Opportunities Act (EEOA), the Rehabilitation Act (1973), Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). If not resolved prior, it will be resolved in court.

Back in the 80's the bus used to pick kids up only at the entrance to Eden Roc on the highway. Anyone who lives back there knows how far it is to walk out to the highway, much less a bunch of kids every morning and night. A bunch of us parents continually fought the DOE to get the kids picked up inside the sub-division, and they refused. We then told them we were going to sue the DOE if the practice didn't change using the above laws. They started picking kids up inside the sub-division 2 weeks later and still do. Hopefully they can again be reminded of the Federal laws they are violating.
