Banks in Hawaii - Kelena - 07-30-2007

I am interested in opening a Bank Account in Hawaii. I will deposit exactly 50 dollars in the account! I am officially impoverished now. Looking for a bank (or credit union) that has Hilo and/or Puna branches, and that has fantastic online services (bill payments, etcetera).

Any suggestions? I rarely write a check, and do most of my banking online.

We are pleased with CU Hawaii, branches in Hilo, Keaau & Pahoa. They seem to go out of their way to be friendly (& the cookie lady in the Hilo branch is a wonderful touch). The Web is:

Also very happy with CU Hawaii. I use the online portion, but in person visits for cash etc are always a pleasure.

You have to have $20,000 on deposit at BOH in order to have a free internet banking. Otherwise they charge you for every transaction plus a monthly fee.

CU Hawaii has been my choice, but you have to maintain $100 in a savings account I do believe.

Online services are wonderful.

Just another day in P A R A D I S E !!

HFS is great. Good online service. Their website is hfsfcu.org

I second this! I really like HFS! I also have BOH and they are very snotty and unaccomodating, especially with mid range size transactions. One time I got into town and had forgotten my wallet - I went into BOH to get cash - went up to the bank officer i always deal with on large items - and she gave me a hard time about no ID - now this is someone i talked with 2-3 times a week, she had my signature card on file, etc.... so I walked out when up to HFS and talked to the person I deal with all the time, and she said absolutely no problem Mrs. Dumond, how much cash do you need today?

My dad, being penny wise, had a deposit at American savings, he moved his to HFS when AS came out with a "senior" discount and wouldn't credit the $6 charge per month back to his acct (about 3 months worth). He said no prob, please close the acct and give me a cashiers check for the full amt (many zeroes) and as their mouths gaped open, he said for $18 you are going to lose some serious overnight interest money tonight. Have a nice day!

A few months ago - when he had his heart attack, the women from the bank met him at the airport to pick up his deposits and give my mom some cash to have on hand. granted they probably wouldnt do that for me but still...(my mom doesnt like using the ATM).

pretty much - I could on line bank many places but that personal touch is important in a pinch!

Has anyone had any experience with Home street Bank or Central Pacific Bank? Those were the two that looked like they had the least amount of fees for a basic checking/savings account.

We opened a checking account with Central Pacific several years ago, although we won't be moving over for another 18 months or so. We choose the "over 50" account which comes with free checking, interest bearing, free online banking. I don't think it includes bill paying which is something like $6/month. We still use our free BofA for that.
