Places to launch a kayak near HPP/HB? - AlohaDave - 11-18-2013 Aloha, I'm looking for information on whether there are any safe places to launch a kayak from either HPP or HB (the sub just south of HPP)? It would be a 15' ocean kayak and most likely transported on a homemade collapsible trailer I would walk to the ocean from a rental. Mahalo, Dave RE: Places to launch a kayak near HPP/HB? - Seeb - 11-18-2013 I think launching off HPP would be kind of like jumping in a wood chipper RE: Places to launch a kayak near HPP/HB? - kalakoa - 11-18-2013 Permits, licenses, fees, inspections? How will you do it without insurance? RE: Places to launch a kayak near HPP/HB? - dragon2k - 11-18-2013 Huh? RE: Places to launch a kayak near HPP/HB? - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 11-18-2013 There are a few places near HPP where you might be able to put a kayak into the ocean on a very calm day, but don't forget you need to get out of the water too. If the waves come up while you are out paddling, you may face a difficult situation returning to land. Seeb's comment about jumping into a wood chipper would be about right when the waves are crashing against the rocks. RE: Places to launch a kayak near HPP/HB? - Guest - 11-18-2013 I will take a stab at it: NO. [/quot Well from what I've read, you'd think they'd (the association's)@ both Hawaiian Beaches and HPP would BUY some empty waterfront lots and open up some safe areas for the residents. It's Hawaii after all. Who wants to see kids getting hurt playing on cliffs. That's a giant mystery to me when the whole neighborhoods could chip in to do it. RE: Places to launch a kayak near HPP/HB? - the hare - 11-18-2013 i know it seems hard to imagine there is very little access to ocean in the area,,but its true...if playing in the ocean is your main priority you should look into Kona side,,,totally different for all kinds of ocean sports... when we first moved to Puna i went crazy looking for good places , just to get in and swim,,until you have spent time on the shoreline,, you just would not get it RE: Places to launch a kayak near HPP/HB? - csgray - 11-18-2013 I'm not sure how anyone can create access to the ocean out of empty lots when there are 25-45 foot cliffs dropping down to the water. Maybe with some dynamite, but the lots are a little too small to play with explosives. I don't know about Beaches/Shores, but HPP also has no legal mechanism to do anything beyond maintaining roads. It seems like there is always someone who wants to spend other people's money, but I know HPP residents are pretty unlikely to want to spend money on creating water access that will just draw more people to drive on the privately funded roads. Carol RE: Places to launch a kayak near HPP/HB? - jlgerk - 11-18-2013 The place to launch in HPP or HB , is Pohoiki. The walk will do you good. |
