Exercise Facilities for Seniors? - KeaauRich - 11-19-2013
We have a senior couple (mid-70's) visiting our Orchidland vacation rental for the month of January and they'd like to continue their exercise routine while they're here. They walk the treadmill, do elliptical, and lift light weights. The only exercise I do is running my mouth and pumping my shampoo bottle, so I have no idea where to send them. Anyone have any suggestions for places that have short-term or daily memberships?

I have a Silver Sneakers membership through my Medicare supplement.
The local location is at the YMCA.

i'd suggest walking the cliffs (slowly at first), gives one more time to observe and contemplate ones existence, raw weather and the great mother PACIFIC...its as close as driving to any gym, free, and treadmill/elliptical will be taken care of...

I belong to Aloha Fitness in Hilo off of Railroad across from Target and next to Kona Transport. I am going in for a workout Wednesday before I go to teach a chess class in Hilo. I could ask them. But, it has been my experience that gyms generally don't do that. Or, if they did let someone pay by the workout, it is usually way out of line. I tried that on Maui some years ago while we were there on vacation, and the cost was pretty outrageous.

There is a senior center in Keaau. Go down the street between the police station and the bank. You will see it on your left. You can pick up a schedule there. They have various classes including fitness. The new term starts the beginning of January. You need to sign up and pay $10 for 10 weeks.

The gym in Hilo, Spencer's? has some sort of short term program. My more active relatives go there when they visit, but I don't recall the details of membership.

After I did my workout at Aloha Fitness I asked one of the owners, Byron, if they had a short term arrangement for visitors. He said they had, either a fee per workout of $5.00, or a weekly fee of $15.00. Myself, I do 4 times a week. $15.00 is a good price for weekly. As I recall the gym I mentioned on Maui wanted like $15 for a workout. Aloha Fitness is near Target in Hilo. They run from 8:00 am till 8:00 pm Monday through Friday. Saturday is 8:00 am till noon. Sunday noon till 4:00.

they might like something different from what they experience at home....
check with the classes offered by the county. Yoga @ the Keaau and Puna facility offers a good work out! And then there's Zumba , in both HPP AND EAGLES.

Registration for senior classes in Keaau starts on December 2, 2013. I highly recommend the tai chi class there on Thursdays at 2PM.
Your renters could email Margaret Yafuso, the program director, to register/ask for info. Her email address is eadkeaau@co.hawaii.hi.us
Or they could wait until the first day of class to register. I believe there are also line dancing classes, ballroom dancing and other exercises classes at the Keeau senior center.
Also, don't forget the Pahoa pool. I don't know if there will be water aerobics classes in January but that would be another option even if they don't care for lap swimming.
