Why here?? - Guest - 11-26-2013

After about 40 years here now, this place is my home. Why my parents moved to a small island in the middle of the pacific, on an active volcano still makes me wonder today?. Was it the tropics, the weather, maybe jobs back in the 60's?. The reasons they fell in love with this place may have been mysteries to them as well. With both of my parents passed now, I wont be able to get their answers to why this ended up being home to them. Most of you are probably here in Puna for all kinds of wonderful reasons so maybe we can share what has brought us all here today?. The reminding of these very fine reasons may help in providing ways to keep these reasons around for the next generation. Or maybe even remind us to stop and appreciate them a little more often?.

Land was cheaper than the mainland.

For real.

After half a century in the midwest, we were able to retire early & I wanted to study environmental science & marine biology...UH-Hilo came into my search, but not having any Hawaii, and very little Pacific experience, we were a little hesitant (I had been diving as a volunteer for the aquarium & been on many Caribbean collecting trips)

Was able to find a copy of the Juvik's "Atlas of Hawaii", there was a line in thereabout how Chicago was the most continental area & Hawaii island was the most maritime....well, we wanted something completely different!

The largest difference is the weather does not change drastically in a couple of hours, here, really the only change is in the amount of rain...

#1 reason? Daughter lives on Maui and I could only afford housing in the Puna area.
#2 reason? Weather. I absolutely love giving my frozen friends on the mainland a weather report for the day here.
#3 reason? Retired and wanted to help people without compensation.
#4 reason? Love the adventure of an active volcano with lava and earthquakes and hiking.
#5 reason? Love the warm ocean water, the sun, the tropical breezes, growing a garden all year.

Cheaper real estate prices (compared to California), the nearby ocean, and most importantly, the wonderfully warm tropical weather, even at night, year round.

Not there yet, but reasons include,
1. Warm all the time. The calling home to Il to brag thing will be a perk.
2. Only area we can afford in Hawaii
3. gardening all year sounds good too.
Carey, I see that weather change thing. Several times a year, nice day, sunny & warm, in the mid 70's, a nice spring/fall day and then a cloud comes and the wind picks up and in an hour or two it's 37 degrees and wind howling with rain with a little snow mixed in for our viewing pleasure. Next morning it's 27 degrees and 4 inches of snow on the ground, my crocus blooming anyway to remind me it really is spring. Will NOT miss that, ever! I was out mowing grass about 25 years back and the temp went from upper 70's to low 50's in less than 10 minutes (big storm, it rained like crazy)! It was on the news as one of the fastest temp changes ever recorded, right here in Illinois.

comin' your way soon!

I grew up under threat of "the Bomb", which would vaporize us all since we lived in a "strategic target area".

Now I live somewhere that's completely irrelevant.
