anyone experienced in electronic repairs? - sittall - 12-15-2013
I have a power supply with a couple of bulging capacitors that need replacing. I have the replacement capacitors and even a soldering iron but am too nervous to attempt it myself. Any suggestions?

Why are you nervous? If you have the iron and solder practice a little bit. If you need help I'll talk you through it. I'm sure you can do it.

you might want to get some soldering tape. The stuff that wicks up solder and some flux... Other then that! Good Luck. They even make a device to suck up the solder once you get it melted. The trick is NOT to heat up the board to long or you could lift the trace off the board.

which TV is this connie? Sounds like you've been watching YouTube!! LOL I could do it for you. Does your iron have a small tip on it? ericlp is right about the soldering tape or wick. I don't have any but it is on the list of things to get on Amazon. That or a suction tool that can suck up the liquid solder. Give a shout today on the cell phone.

Recommend a temperature-controlled soldering iron; if you don't have one, get something in the 12-15W range.
Too much heat will lift the traces on a cheap PCB.

Soldering flux is best for any desoldering. It lowers the melting point of the existing solder on the connection, and makes the solder flow in such a manner that it can be easily sucked up with either a solder sucker or wick. I repaired a number of boards during the 'capacitor plague' of a few years ago. Amazing that a 20 cent part can shut down a thousand dollar device. Try Mouser or Digi Key online.

] Amazon has the same stuff, solder flux paste, really does work wonders when de-soldering. The last thing you want is a lifted pad, then a lifted trace, etc. Who ever sold you the caps should have some.Aloha

I've had a hard time finding resistors. I went to Radio Shack on the mall... had to buy a bundle of about 200 just to get a 8.2K ohm resistor... even then he said "I'm not sure there is one in the package"!!! As it turned out, a guy in New Zealand is sending one to me for free! Lucked out there. I've tried a couple of other outlets but they either won't ship her or they will only ship via UPS for 50 bucks!
