power sprayer/painting recommendations - unknownjulie - 12-26-2013 I am planning on painting my house myself. I am assuming I need to buy a power sprayer to clean the house off with/remove paint chips. Then, the next assumption is that I should buy a sprayer that I can carry up on a tall ladder to paint. Any recommendations or advice? Any one have their house painted by someone else? How did it go and how much did it cost? Mahalo! RE: power sprayer/painting recommendations - dragon2k - 12-26-2013 Power sprayer at HD make sure it has a Honda motor! Sherwin Williams for paint they also rent sprayers! Nothing left to do but Smile Smile Smile RE: power sprayer/painting recommendations - rainyjim - 12-26-2013 Not much local knowledge on this topic, but on suggestion... If you are going to power wash off the old paint, take a look at your wood and consider staining / sealing rather than painting? I seem to remember you mentioning redwood? In other posts? Could be really pretty but unsure what the condition would be like and if that'd be possible after power-washing the old paint off. Best of luck with this endeavor! RE: power sprayer/painting recommendations - terracore - 12-26-2013 They sometimes sell power washers at Costco. I have seen both the electric and the gas types available there. Gas ones can dial up more PSI than the electric models and don't require a power outlet. They also cost more. Though the electric models are probably strong enough to cut into your siding. Sometimes less is more. You can probably rent a power washer at HD. In my experience the high pressure hoses on these things don't last very long, if you don't need one for future use you might pay less in rental than what you would pay on a hose replacement on a unit that you own. RE: power sprayer/painting recommendations - unknownjulie - 12-26-2013 More great ideas! I did not even think to rent a sprayer. That is the way to go! I did use Behr paint/primer in Texas prior to moving and thought that paint was really good. Someone else told me to use "gripper" primer. Yeah, I'd love to somehow stain/seal it, but it is too dark and I have to go lighter to spruce the place up. IMHO And I have a block foundation/garage area under the house and huge cement steps on both sides, that all have to somehow be sealed too. I'm sure I'll be working on this house until the day I die. RE: power sprayer/painting recommendations - lquade - 12-27-2013 hey julie. i have painted 2 houses myself, after getting bids from the pros and about falling over. one was new construction. i bought a wagner sprayer from HD, it cost about 180 and boy was it worth it. i primed the whole place then painted. what everyone really liked was i did the entire eve of roof so instead of seeing the white underside of the tin, it was the same color as the rest of the eve. if i had tried to do that by hand, what a job that would have been.. by the second house, the sprayer quit, but for the money it was outstanding.. this year we went to get another and they no longer carry the wagner but have a blue one and we did the same thing. this time, old construction and we had to power wash. i bought the husky hd brand again about 180 bucks, electric and it is a piece of ****. didnt even do one job. so, i guess i would rent the power washer, but the paint sprayer is totally worth it. i also have a little hand held wagner sprayer i have had for well over 30 years which is wonderful for touch up but the little paint tub only holds about a quart so alot of refills if doing a big job, they come with bigger and bigger paint tubs, but then if you are lifting it over your head it gets heavy really fast.(i am an old lady not alot of upper arm strenght) i use that on small jobs like my chicken house or shed. anyway i really recommend the electric paint sprayers, and get about 50 feet of hose and a helper and you are all set to go[] as far as paint i like the benjamin moore at hpm, i like behr ok, but dont like the paint/primer all in one. worth the money to add the anti mildew stuff also i think... RE: power sprayer/painting recommendations - Carey - 12-27-2013 Our last house was a cedar sided house stained a really dark chocolate, we used a Thompson semi-transparent penetrating stain in a light grey & it lighten up the house, allowing some of the darker tone through but much lighter This house we are using a light grey Benjamin & Moore solid stain for the Hardipanel, & it has covered & stuck to the painted T1-11 & Masonite battens. Since I have never had a lot of 2nd story outiside painting, I have used a brush (the cedar was nice with a special rough siding brush that looked more like an large pad brush) RE: power sprayer/painting recommendations - unknownjulie - 12-27-2013 Yeah, painting is really easy, just a bit labor intensive and people get intimidated by the hugeness of the job. I saw the wagner sprayers on amazon. I really have no idea what is on this house. There are areas that are 4 inches by say, 2 inches that are totally without any paint or coverage, so I can't just go over it with a stain. It would be uneven. I cannot even tell what kind of wood it is, or even if it's wood, but it is in long vertical strips- so I am assuming it is wood siding. It's pretty much a mess. Big job. Thanks for all of the suggestions. I just keep telling myself, "this will all be worth it in the long run.... This will all be worth it in the long run... " RE: power sprayer/painting recommendations - unknownjulie - 12-27-2013 Aloha, thought I'd share what I'd found out. To rent a 1400 psi water sprayer from HD is 70 dollars for 24hrs. Might be better to actually buy one of those. On the other hand. You can rent a paintsprayer for 59 dollars for the day. It is 3000 psi and that sounds like a great deal. It somes with a 50 foot extension cord and a 50 ft hose, but they'll give you another one if you need it. RE: power sprayer/painting recommendations - Royall - 12-27-2013 If you rent one be sure to have them explain how they want the system cleaned! If not done to there satisfaction, you get a heavy ding on your bill! Puna Rental has better prices I believe. Rented lots of tools from them when building my house and working on others house too.
