tap water is discolored in Hilo - unknownjulie - 12-31-2013

I just noticed this. Anyone have any info? I'll be boiling it until I hear something more, but it is rust colored.

Must be those dang property tax cheaters causing the water system to be underfunded.

Yeah, I'm glad to have municipal water, but I wonder if the system was overloaded by the rain. Anyone know?

Call the Dept of Water Supply 961-8060 find out if any reported problems in that area

After making several phone calls, all I have found out is that, "the water is safe. It is tested every week and comes from a well and holding tanks, and if the water is discolored it is because of my own water lines on my property that I need to check"... So, Evidently, this is my own problem, and I will monitor it... The city is not concerned in the least with my phonecall, aside from wanting to come onto my property to check out my own property and I told them that wasn't necessary at this time.

If the tap water runs more clear after running the water awhile, then does that point to a problem with my own water line? How does this work? If a small leak is present and water normally is leaking out, but then after a heavy rain -the pipe is submerged in rain water- then is that how water then enters the water pipe to come out the tap? How does the city know that this is not happening somewhere other then my property? The pressure is fine and has been.

I would guess its from flooding regardless of what the water people say. I've seen this happen in other states during heavy rains. I would boil it and check with neighbors.

I would check with your neighbors to see if they are experiencing the same issue. If so, then it may be a broader problem, if not, then it is likely that it would be a problem on your property. Did your area lose power yesterday? If the wells supplied by the power shut down, they could have experienced a loss of head in the pump that, when power was restored, may have dislodged accumulated sediment in the lines. Did you get any air out of the lines after the storm? That too can dislodge sediments. None of these would indicate that the water is unsafe to drink...

Yeah, I've seen it in other states also, and it is not a private water line issue! But whateva..... I did not see any air or anything unusual. I'll ask my neighbors if I see them of course.
