Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele - Rob Tucker - 12-31-2013

A Hawaiian woman with 36 characters in her last name has won her fight for space on her driver’s license and state ID card to accommodate her full name.

It’s a small but long victory for Janice “Lokelani” Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele.

Ha! Great reply.

The irony of this is that the woman is 100% haole; it's her married name. Not sure why her (late) husband didn't have it on his license or didn't fight for it.

I vote for Keihan~1, or 2 or whatever the case. How do you write that on a citation?

As I understand it, this wasn't an issue until an HPD officer made a big deal about it during a traffic stop. Only then did she appeal to the state for a solution.

Apparently this victory was to be able to put an okena in her name but none of the news articles I have read have actually put an okena in her name. So does anyone know where the okena goes?

The 'okina goes in the "he'e" portion of her name.

The news earlier last fall had that the name change was more needed because of he new license ID requirement (remember with the new license requirement for secure ID, ALL of your records must match, and if her married name & her records, and her marriage certificate had "Keihanaikukauakahihulihe`ekahaunaele" on it, then her license must have it....and that was the issue, so it would not matter what her ethnicity was, but the legal name that was used on her identification records that were required for her license identification..

Pretty much every foreigner who ever came into another country had their last name changed in some sort of way, I guess its pretty cool she was able to keep it.
