Most Nutritious/Medicinal Plants to Grow? - DubLove711 - 01-01-2014 Im moving to Hawaiian Shores, and want to plant trees and plants with the highest nutritional and medicinal value. Three that I can think of are: Moringa, Sour Sop, and Avocado. RE: Most Nutritious/Medicinal Plants to Grow? - hilodiver - 01-01-2014 Olena is good. Hawaiian Turmeric. Aloha! RE: Most Nutritious/Medicinal Plants to Grow? - Cagary - 01-01-2014 I think you'll find that any tropical fruit tree is going to produce highly nutritious food for you. I don't think that there is anything special about Soursop or Avocado fruit. Eating a wide variety of fruits and vegetables is the best way providing a well balanced diet for you and your family. Also find out what fruits you like. No use growing a jackfruit tree if no one is going to eat the fruit. I'm sure you realize that the ground in Hawaiian Shores is less than ideal and that in order to get your trees to grow in a healthy manner, you're going to have to really put a lot of effort into caring for them. -Veritas odium parit”(Terence 195–159 BC))-"Truth begets hatred". RE: Most Nutritious/Medicinal Plants to Grow? - DubLove711 - 01-01-2014 What areas in Puna are the best for growing? RE: Most Nutritious/Medicinal Plants to Grow? - rainyjim - 01-02-2014 For most nutritious medicinal I'd go with Cannabis, if this is to controversial for you I'd look into mangosteen, acai, and pomegranate - all knowm widely as 'super-foods' because of there high nutritional content. Generally the subdivisions while having the cheapest land have the worst / least soil. Try and get acreage that hasn't been covered by a lava flow recently ! There is no one area / place. Although organic farmers seem to concregate near four corners / papaya farms rd. Best of luck. Aloha mai kakou RE: Most Nutritious/Medicinal Plants to Grow? - Rene Siracusa - 01-02-2014 Citrus of any kind will do well in HS and provide you with ample Vit. C. Native medicinal plants that will do well in your area are Noni, Mamaki and 'Awa (the latter will prefer some shade from the afternoon sun). Coconuts don't take up much space and you can always underplant taro, yams or sweet potatoes, etc. Don't forget breadfruit and bananas (for potassium). RE: Most Nutritious/Medicinal Plants to Grow? - DubLove711 - 01-05-2014 Wow thanks you guys, that's some good advice. Maybe with the right amenities I can grow all the good stuff that grows well on the Puna Shores. I'm interested in buying more property just for the optimal growing location. Can anyone give me some specific areas? Eventually I would like to have a small self sustaining farm with bees animals and fish; adding to the down to earth, forward thinking, and earth improving community in Puna! RE: Most Nutritious/Medicinal Plants to Grow? - unknownjulie - 01-06-2014 I have a lot in Orchidland, sort of in the middle of a large area that has drainage issues. My lot just happened (good luck) have a really high spot right in the center that I cleared and is buildable. I have a foot or more of soil in many areas of my lot and it really has an excellent climate for growing all manner of things. The land is still cheap in there also. My lot is towards the back. 39th or 4oth probably have the "best" climate for plants. I think anywhere that water has been draining in the past, will have larger trees and more soil- even on the recent lava flows. Of course, up in Hamakua there is lots of soil, but is much more expensive. Someone else may have a different opinion of course, but that's what punaweb is for! RE: Most Nutritious/Medicinal Plants to Grow? - kapohololo - 01-10-2014 coconut, banana, noni, aloe, taro, jus gettin started.. RE: Most Nutritious/Medicinal Plants to Grow? - Guest - 01-11-2014 PEPPERS ! People always forget peppers and chiles which can be used in so many ways for cooking and medicinal. I grow in my house in South florida. green, purple, yellow, poblano, jalapeno and hawaiian chile. I would guess they would all do well in HI too. |
