A cult? In all my readings so far about the big island I have never came across anything talking about a cult. This was number 4 on your list, can you elaborate?
edit: Or if anyone has info I'd be grateful to hear about it.

A little travel and history of the islands - one comes to learn that there are spots best left alone..... some of the areas around Hanna Maui always leave me with that vibe
In the very old days many parts of these islands were left alone.... not a cult - but certainly something that will get the hair up in the back of ones neck if you are attuned to your surroundings.... then and now.
Its why Japanese (end times) tourists travel all these miles as well imho.......

Kalapana Has a similar vibe to Hana. But in organization is where the similarities end. I used to be a Hana Tour Guide for Temptation tours. There are way more tourists there than Kalapana and a lot more money to be made. The tourists are not shown lots of the special spots that are really hard to access. They are shuttled to designated areas and the whole operation is highly controlled. All guides have to work for a licensed company and go through extensive training. It has very dangerous terrain and despite all the precautions people get injured all the time. Luckily I never lost anyone but It wouldn't be hard to do. People do foolish things when they are let loose at waterfalls. Its nderstood that you don't take anyone off the beaten path. I would always take people to local fruit stands and craft stands. A lot of the locals depend on the tour companies for their income and always give their Aloha for bringing tourists to them. I'm just wondering how regulated the tour co's are in Kalapana. Seems like they don't have a lot of regulations or licensing required.

For years people have talked in hushed tones about groups of organized individuals who gather for a mutual interest in this area. When you're called the cub scouts it's all good. When that group does bad things to people, you can call them a "cult". The large numbers of people that go missing are astounding in this area. Per capita, the island is on pace with places like NYC for missingpersons. Those two kids are not the only missing persons cases that have been generated in this area. The problem is real and young kids are disapearing weekly from this area. Sometimes the missing are from other places and sometimes they are local kids. What seems consistent is that there are no resources to look for them. I remember right here on this forum a young lady detailed her account of an alleged abduction and drugging she suffered. She was petrified and made claims that this group was far reaching and involved in a far reaching conspiracy to kidnap women. Was it true? I don't know but it had a certain ring of truth too it. In my senior year of HS a group of friends and I went to the old kalapana beach, before it was covered over. What I saw that night might just have been a large group of people enjoying a bonfire but why would they all be wearing matching white cloaks?

They make great Toasted Coconut candy there at the "Halfway to Hana" stand too. I do miss that banana bread. That place is a "linked in" required stop for the tour vans.

I remember some kind of strange monkey cult out on the Kalapana pahoehoe a few years back. Didn't last long but managed a mention in the papers:

When you say "young kids are disappearing weekly from this area" are we talking about young teenagers (possible runaways) or children?
