What to grow at 3,100 feet - Hotzcatz - 01-16-2014 Well, here's another "what to grow" topic. How about at 3,100' feet? It's up near Volcano, but not quite in the village, just above 2,500 feet. A small quarter acre that is currently in small ohia, tree fern and some sort of bramble and other various undergrowth typical to that area. What does well up there? I'm just putting in trees and such, we won't be up there for at least a year but it's always good to get trees started as early as possible. If it is a perennial, then those could go in to. Seems like bananas do well there, I'd not have thought it, but there's bananas on the neighboring property and they seem quite happy. Kurt Wilson RE: What to grow at 3,100 feet - hikatz - 01-17-2014 If you have a chance go to the Volcano Farmers' Market on Sunday, will give you an idea of what grows well in that area. Everyone is so helpful, if you ask I am sure you will get some good advice. http://thecoopercenter.org/FarmersMarketVolcano.html RE: What to grow at 3,100 feet - dayna - 01-17-2014 We've got bananas growing up there, our property is around the Akatsuka orchid place. Growing well are heliconia and a lot of invasives. I've tried a few things up there. Papaya didn't do well (didn't grow and also pigs got into it), citrus was not doing well so I transplanted down here to Orchidland. Ti Plants are growing really well, as is sugarcane. I gave a brazil plum tree to a friend and it's doing really well at 2500 feet, so you might try that. I have a few extra in small pots if you want one.
