TV or not TV, that is the question - Lokahi - 08-13-2007 Buying a new plasma or LCD television/monitor to replace an old CRT television that time has done what time does to electronics. We had planned to wait until we are there but with the current real estate market seems we will be on the mainland awhile longer. Any experience with shipping the plasma or LCD monitors or should we consider leaving it here and purchase a new one again there? Thanks in advance to all of you for your amazing candor and valuable submissions. RE: TV or not TV, that is the question - Rob Tucker - 08-13-2007 If it was me I would buy it here merely for warranty issues. RE: TV or not TV, that is the question - macuu222 - 08-13-2007 I agree with Rob. Better to buy it here. We have a 60" sony projection tv that we bought here at Sears 2 years ago with a 3 year waranty. After 2 years the picture light engine went bad and had to be replaced which would have cost $2000.00 if we didn't have the waranty. The tech said that mildew was the cause and that there is really not much you can do to prevent it in this climate. Electronic equipment just doesn't last as long here than in less humid mainland areas. RE: TV or not TV, that is the question - glennoid - 08-13-2007 I highly recommend people buy a wall projector unit instead of a huge TV (plasma, LCD, or other), especially if you do most of your TV watching in the evening. Works well on a white wall, and even better with a special screen. They have units small enough to bring in your carry-on luggage. Glenn RE: TV or not TV, that is the question - Kelena - 08-13-2007 Sustainability dictates you send once the television goes all the way across the ocean from China, that you not bring it halfway back! Buy on island. Used! RE: TV or not TV, that is the question - Bob Orts - 08-13-2007 Don't know if this is true or not, but once heard you don't want a plasma that's been on a plane. Something about the pressure and plasma seal. I know in the Denver area, plasma TV's are not the ideal choice due to elevation and many have had problems. One store has a sign posted that their plasma TV’s were shipped by boat and was never on an airplane. That may be a question to ask regarding how it will be transported. RE: TV or not TV, that is the question - missydog1 - 08-13-2007 The TV tech in Hilo (Hatada TV) told me that TV's are factory set for the earth's magnetic field and that TV's intended for Hawai'i are specially set and factory marked "H" as part of the ID # and needless to say they only ship those to Hawai'i -- so buy it here |
