Are there any restaurants/eateries in HPP? - EightFingers - 02-06-2014

Are there any? Seems like a decent business oppotunity unless the Dept. of Health is killing them off.

Edited to change title for clarity.

I don't know about a restaurant but I do think they need a little convenience store out here in HPP.

Anyone brave enough to navigate the "Special Use" process probably can't afford the infrastructure requirements, or it would have happened by now.

Same with all the other subdivisions; the 2-acre site across from the Ainaloa mailboxes has been "pending" for years -- on top of which, the subdivision includes a "centrally located" 5-acre parcel designated for future commercial use.

Remember, everyone can meet their needs with three simple words: "Drive To Hilo."

The biggest hurdle for an eatery is the water issues...few lots are hooked up to county water. Well water would probably need test results every so often... & I think catchment is even more complicated...
The second biggest would be the commercial septic...

I think the septic would be the bigger issue for a restaurant. I mean, if you have to you can haul water, but...

It needs one. A deli or something were you could get an egg sandwich and coffee. It would make a killing if you could front the money long enough to get through the bs.

I think that gift shop on makuu closed

Has anyone ever explored food trucks (not to be confused with wheeled food carts)? These are wildly popular right now, and there's at least one web-site devoted exclusively to food truck patron reviews, etc.

Based on the concerns with estabishing a brick and mortar business in Puna, it seems like these would be a viable alternative. Not a restaurant, per se, but at least a place to grab some grub.

Portland, Oregon, has gone food truck crazy, as have many other places.

There are very few places you can legally Park one.
unless someone wants to turn one of the 20 acre lots into a farmers market

The food truck is an excellent idea, at least until it's parked somewhere, at which point it's a zoning problem again -- I've only seen them at farmers' markets or on a parking lot that's obviously commercial.

Maybe if the food truck drove around at random, updating a website with its next stop?

^^most food trucks use Twitter to tell patrons where they are !
