What is WITH this woman? - malolo - 02-14-2014 One would think that after last year's incredibly shameful incident, Faye'd reflect a bit, and muster some self-control, before running her mouth. Small wonder so many kids are bullies, if this is the best we can do for a role-model in Puna! http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/24730973/commitee-to-investigate-rep-hanohanos-alleged-misconduct RE: What is WITH this woman? - Kelena - 02-14-2014 What is with people who post a link and don't summarize it? RE: What is WITH this woman? - malolo - 02-14-2014 Sorry Kelena. She scares me. Felt it best to simply link. (Didn't realize til after I'd posted there's already a thread under Politics) RE: What is WITH this woman? - kalakoa - 02-15-2014 If only there were some kind of "ethics board" to review such offenses... RE: What is WITH this woman? - lquade - 02-15-2014 this woman is shameless, and yet...it doesnt seem that voters have much of a memory, or even care, if the people they keep electing represent THEM. RE: What is WITH this woman? - Chunkster - 02-15-2014 Part of the reason Hanohano is still in office is the "first past the post" system used in the Democratic Primary. There was at least one occasion where she did not get a majority of the primary votes, but she got the nomination because she had more votes than anyone else. Unlike many other states, there is no runoff in party primaries in Hawaii. In Puna, having the Demo nomination is pretty much a free ticket into office. BTW, Russell Ruderman got into office by getting about 38% of the primary vote. Although I think he has wasted a lot of good will and political capital pushing bad science on GMO, Ruderman at least hasn't gone off on racist rants and earned an investigation. RE: What is WITH this woman? - PauHana - 02-15-2014 Can anyone answer her question? Why do people come here to get away from people like themselves, and immediately start trying to turn Hawaii into the place they left? Perhaps a 22 year old from Oregon pontificating about fixing Hawaii should be "pffted" more often. It is part of the educational experience people don't get today from our overly sensitive to your feelings society. I seriously doubt his testimony consisted of original thoughts. More likely he simply was regurgitating a classroom discussion, and quite full of himself doing it. Of course don't tell him that, you might hurt his feelings. pfft. RE: What is WITH this woman? - opihikao - 02-15-2014 PauHana, being her question was a "loaded" one, it's difficult to answer. More important is the manner in which she conducts herself as an elected official under the "Western" political arena (American system). There is a certain amount of decorum expected no matter your personal issues and beliefs. Comes down to not what you are saying, but how you say it. She is not representing Faye Hanohano in her tirades, she is representing her entire community. She lacks basic social/people skills, and is far from "polished". Although her position on issues may have merit, it is clouded by her poor delivery. Unbecoming of a representative of Puna, worse (for us kanaka maoli), a Hawaiian. Hilahila. JMO. RE: What is WITH this woman? - pahoated - 02-15-2014 It's more like her background is the local style of casual conversation which can be loud and animated, slipping into pidgin a lot. While a new age puritan mainland transplant may find that rude and/or offensive, it is part of living here, becoming familiar with the dialects and inflections here and not trying to make them mainland proper. I see it all over, locals having a good talk-story, getting louder but not angry, usually laughing a lot. It's understandable that not being more professional in a public position is not a good image. But why do we kamaaina have to cater to somebody from Oregon, taking government time for a "testimony"? This is the real BS around here, tourists are being allowed to give government testimony on our local tax dollars. Why aren't these "witnesses" required to show local ID first? "This island Hawaii on this island Earth" RE: What is WITH this woman? - rainyjim - 02-15-2014 "Why do people come here to get away from people like themselves, and immediately start trying to turn Hawaii into the place they left? " What a convenient blanket assumption to throw on any issue you don't agree with. Apparently works for distracting from biggoted politicians also? To address your assumption (with one of my own)- I think most come here for the tropical climate / locale - I don't think many come here to "get away from people like themselves" as for changing things I think most people want things like a hospital, mailbox, decent electric rates, a library, etc. Also, my assumption, is that most "locals" (whatever that means) want all of those things also. On the other hand, (assuming again on my part/though based on observation) I believe most transplants from the mainland et. al. did come here to get away from things like big box stores - wally world, longs, (the mall) - etc etc and the culture/industry that results. I feel as if "locals" (again, whatever that means) support such big box stores - wally world, longs, (the mall) etc etc - and the culture/industry that results. |
