I love my dog but..it would appear not many people on the island feel the same.

As most of y ou know, I plan to arrive on the BI now in just about 60 days.

I have been looking on craigslist for a place to stay monthly till I find a house, hopefully a place that is furnished or semi-furnished.

It seems NO ONE likes dogs, every listing says absolutely no pets!! I have a small dog, about 15lbs, doesnt yap, is completely house trained, obeys all commands and is sweet as cane sugar.

Whats up with that ?

Not so much the dogs, but the owners. We have 3 dogs, at one point had 6 - all house dogs.
That said, if I did long term rentals, pets would be on an individual basis and only after getting to know the owners.

That seems fair. Ive lived many places, and never seen an area with so little pet friendly rentals available

There are 108 listings on Craigslist right now that allow dogs.

You can also look on VRBO.com They list pet friendly rentals as well or do a Google search. Here is a list on VRBO http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/usa/hawaii/big-island/puna-district/pahoa?suitability=pets+considered

Call the owners and talk to them.

These are both Puna, there are more.

You do realize that in lower Puna most of the rentals are vacation rentals, don't you ?

Yes, which is why I was searching int he wrong places. I should have been looking into the "sublets" part of craigslists, instead of rentals. Mahalos !

Many in Hawaii LOVE dogs...but until a few months ago, a landlord could request an additional "pet" deposit if they allowed any pets...so many landlords still are not as willing to take on the POTENTIAL of damage since in the past there was no way to compensate for that potential... (add: also helps to remember that on island, a dog can be a pet or a guard animal, or a hunting animal ...or some unspeakable things...and a landowner would be open to the potential damage from any of these)

I have yet to hear from any of the landlords I know on how the new legislation is going, but I have a feeling most will take a "wait and see" stance, as this could effect their income

The county has taken great strides for initiating more pet friendly activities in the last few years, although most would agree they still lag far behind many other communities.

As with most everything on this island, many of the pet initiatives I have seen here are started and supported by a few people that are willing to take the time and effort to make these ideas a reality.

2 ADD: I meant to type that until a few months ago, a landlord could NOT charge an additional deposit (by law) so many were (naturally) reluctant to rent to pet owners...the new law that allows an additional 'pet deposit' is very new & very new things take a lot of time to become common practice here...

Of course, with the new law, it wouldn't hurt to contact a landowner of a place you might have interest in & see if they will accept an additional 'pet deposit'... who knows, maybe some will!
