Goats? - microage97 - 03-10-2014

I have 3 acres in upper orchildland and I am wondering if I could use goats to clear out the ferns ect in a section basis?

If you fence it in, yeah. The goats will clear it up pretty good.

Hey Dayna - Where you located? I think we are going to be neighbours. :-) I was thinking maybe chaining a goat up and moving as needed. Of course a daily check up and watering. I haven't thought a lot about this yet. :-)

I would suggest against chaining. Dogs roaming are a real problem up here, you have to have a fence or you will show up to a dead goat.

If you do a moveable fence, like an electric one that is safer than tying out.

I'm located on 40th, near the Aulii side. If you shoot me an email through the system we can chat more. Nice to know my neighbors!

Keep in mind goats are sociable creatures and have a herd mentality. I.e. they like to have friends. - I highlyrecommend you don't get just 1 goat. It will be a sad goat. Also goats don't like to be chained up. - imagine being chained in the hot hawaiian sun and/or rain ... How would you feel if someone chained you up?

What do they do to the Ohia trees on one's property? Wouldn't they start striping the bark off and eventually kill the trees?

Goats do love Ohia. My goats have killed a couple small ones.

Oh ya I was think a few goats maybe 2 or 4 and I am now considering a smaller movable electric fence set up. Ya I wouldn't want them to be out in the hot sun without shade and water. It looks like I have maybe 1/2" of dirt / organic material on top of the lava, would that be enough to grow some kind of ground clover?

You could try to establish perennial peanut - its a legume in the peanut family - the goats think its candy. I think its also referred to as tropical alfalfa.
