People watching @ Island Naturals - Todd H - 03-17-2014
My curiosity is brimming over and I have to ask the fine residents of Puna for further explanations.
I've noticed quite a few posters making references to "strange" people who apparently favor Island Naturals in Pahoa for their shopping. C'mon, now, you folks who write these comments have some explaining to do, please.
What, for example, are some of the most bizarre sightings in or around this establishment? Is the "scene" so unique that you're not likely to see it elsewhere (e.g. Malama Market)?
Believe me, I conducted searches on both Google and Bing (including image searches) and saw nothing that you wouldn't encounter at any small town market.

Sunday is the peak day for sighting eccentrics, all kinds of people come to town for Maku'u market and to do their shopping. My personal favorite is the 20 somethings who take up the entire intersection of two aisles to have a conversation while doing yoga stretches and tell me to "Have more Aloha" when I politely ask them to make room for me and my cart so I can do my shopping and get out. Also the conspiracy theorists who monopolize the outside tables to discuss chem trails, government spying, UFOs, the Illuminati, and various other tin foil hat theories. Those guys look more "Puna normal" but can really go off the deep end with their theories.

Like Puna, Island Naturals attracts a diverse type of people.
I think the snarky references to the customers there say more about the people making those judgements than the actual people at the store.
In other words; Consider the source.

Snark is in the eye of the beholder. Observing eccentricities is not necessarily being judgmental, and eccentrics clearly don't WANT to be just like everyone else, so observing that they aren't is not being snarky, in fact it is proof they have accomplished their goal. Although the aisle blockers do irritate the heck out of me, since grocery shopping is something I just want to get in and do and get out. I have better things to do with my time than spend hours shopping for a few staples, but I just don't go in on Sunday after 11 or so.

Sorry carol, I wasn't referring to you, and neither was the OP when talking about peoples comments. I believe we were both refering to people like obie who seem to think that anyone criminal, insane, poor or Democrat, hang at the Natch.

Since the number of "poor criminal insane democrats" living in Puna is quite low, it maybe 100%. Although that could be true of any business in Puna.

You know, many of the people who shop and hang out at Island Naturals in Pahoa look as if they've been to Burning Man, but never left. They're still living the Burning Man way of life.
