Looking for microscope. Anywhere to get one on BI? No "chemistry" sets in shops anymore....Daughter wants to look at bacteria in water ( if that helps)...

Fyi, bacteria are very small and hard to see without advanced equipment ~ 1-5 microns ... So all your daughter will probably be able to discern is their shape or visible "morphology" - this may be helpful - or not. Just fyi, and best of luck to you.

Common morphologies are - rod (bacilli), sphere (cocci), and spiral (spirilli)

I'm assuming your daughter will find water molds or oomycetes.

These are very similar in morphology to fungi but were recently reclassified from fungi to chromalveolata.

Aloha mai kakou.

Although an oil immersion 1000x would be the best, she now has the use of a compound scope with 400x, which will help, esp with some of the filamentous bacteria & cyanobacteria in sea water...

And she now has the [usa of] a 20x field scope for fun, as many water things are just cool!

Oh -S & L, checked my records & have a nice link for bacteria fixing & staining (have used tincture violet for crystal violet)- link:

& a great article on fun searching microbes growing an aquarium:
