cooking lessons needed - mac nut - 04-02-2014

well, i figure since I retired and moved to the big island I have the time to learn how to cook. My job on the mainland for 16 years was at a camp for kids and the staff had all meals cooked for them along with the kids.

so after 16 years of no cooking, I need help. my girl friend does not like to cook. any ideas for classes would be welcome.

In the day - I shared a house - we had a cleaning lady that came in did the house and stocked the freezer with pre cooked meals for a week.

leaving a bill and a list of menus and the groceries she would need take back on her next visit to make our selections, very well thought out to reduce waste.

I thought that business model better than fed ex..... you dont miss your water 'till the well runs dry - grin

Cooking can be so much fun with a partner. Smile You and your girlfriend should try to cook a meal once or twice a week together. One of my favorite things to do is try cooking with local foods I've never really tried before. That way I'm trying new foods and even if it doesn't turn out exactly, no real harm done. The internet has unlimited potential in recipes and how-to-cook everything even for beginners, including recipes using local ingredients. Good luck whatever way you go! [Smile]

I love to cook, and when I get there I'd be happy to show you some simple easy but exquisite meals.

I like to stop in at the burger king after shopping at home depot and yesterday the counter gal said, hi weren't you here this morning?" I said no, that was yesterday. so my new goal is next time for them to say "gee, haven't seen you for awhile" [Big Grin]

oneself, you hired! when do you get here?

thanks everyone for the suggestions

Get a copy of the Joy of Cooking, it has great information on the nuts and bolts of cooking, the stuff people used to learn from their mothers and grandmothers. The recipes are pretty much standard American food but the information chapters are priceless and will teach you the vocabulary of cooking. My mother gave me a copy when I got my first apartment and it was a life saver.

Another really helpful cookbook that will make you realize that good food can be fast and simple is Beard on Pasta, the recipes are good, but the best part is the attitude towards good food, he stresses fast, simple, easy meals that taste like gourmet. Jammie Oliver's 30 Minute Meals TV show is fun and also stresses fast fresh foods.
