Growing elevations - Guest - 04-18-2014 I was wondering what or rather what wont grow at 1500 feet ? 3000 feet ? RE: Growing elevations - bananahead - 04-18-2014 coconuts and mango struggle, and Im sure other types of fruit trees too. where I am its more about how much rain ie too much rain in upper Puna for some types of crops or trees ... but then there are crops that thrive in the rain too that wont grow well lower in the hotter rain shadows along the Puna coast. best areas IMO for most crops is in between coastal and upland areas ie about the level of hwy 130 or lower Orchidland/upper HPP where the rain amounts is in between as well... ****************************************************************** save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha RE: Growing elevations - Guest - 04-18-2014 Thank you. the 3 areas I am looking are HPP,OLE, and Mountain View Volcano area ... RE: Growing elevations - VancouverIslander - 04-18-2014 Some mango will grow up there - a guy named Marvin from Kopua farm lots has em and sells at Macuu some times. Coffee loves it above 1500'. RE: Growing elevations - Guest - 04-18-2014 Any idea about banana, pineapple or papaya? Is it safe to assume that standard garden vegetables and herbs all grow ? (if you shield them at frost) A little bummed about coconut as I expect to be using and sourcing my own Coconut milk and Oil. Pineapple does not tolerate frost. (I don't know where the frost line is, but it's at least Volcano.) The "standard" garden vegetables/herbs mostly work, but some of them need raised bed and/or greenhouse (bugs, too wet), and there are a few that just don't work right (chill hours, length of day). RE: Growing elevations - bananahead - 04-18-2014 Papaya need good drainage (dont like 'wetfeet'), best place for Papaya is lower Puna near 4 corners in the cinder (the papaya capital of the World) ****************************************************************** save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha RE: Growing elevations - robguz - 04-18-2014 I think Marvin, the banana guy is at 1600' and has no problems growing dozens of varieties, including some very tropical ones that are happier in much hotter parts of the South Pacific. People certainly grow them in Waimea at over 2500'. Higher elevations mean you can possibly grow cherimoya, something I'd love to grow at sea level, but can't. RE: Growing elevations - Cagary - 04-18-2014 quote: Its true Annona cherimoya won't do well at sea level, but Annona squamosa (Sugar Apple) should do well. You won't find them the Big Island, but Frankies on Oahu might have some or you could get a tree from FL. -Veritas odium parit”(Terence 195–159 BC))-"Truth begets hatred". |
